How many of you would consider this?

So I've been planning this big move to get out of this city I'm currently in. I've thrown around several ideas, even had a post on here about it. I've really been considering San Diego, but lately something else has caught my attention. I'm talking to some of my co workers who have traveled extensively and they told me I should consider being a fitness director on a carnival cruise line or a resort. I'm young, a successful personal trainer, got nothing tying me down, and would love to see the world before its too late. I'm thinkin I would love to be a fitness director at a resort in Jamaica. I've been there once and loved it. What do you think? Am I missing/forgetting something that should make me think twice? I've never lived out of the country, let alone on a cruise line.

dude

I say do it bro. I would like to warn you though that a friend of mine did something similar and while he gained some great life experience, he lost the stability someone his age should have. You may regret it one day for not moving to a city, getting in with a solid company and building your life on a more solid foundation. just something to think about,

check out the pay... I hear it sucks. If you are use to making a good living as a PT you may be better off seeing the world as a passenger rather than as an employee!

if you choose to go to a resort, you have to choose your location wisely... for many islands, the pay can be really crappy, and the standard of life is never what you expect outside the resort... and you will get bored of being in the resort real quick...
also, things that you are accustomed to here are VERY expensive (i.e. groceries, clothing etc)...

i would suggest barbados if you are seriously thinking of that... the standard of life is very high there for a WI island, and the pay probably wouldn't be that bad... other options would be Bahamas, Bermuda, St. Kitts, Antigua, St. Lucia... if you have the time/money, take a trip to some of these and make sure you really get out and around the land, do your research choose one that is best suited to you...

(Barbados is a beautiful island and realtively safe in comparison to some others (i.e. Jamaica, no offence, i love the island, but it has some real issues)

I'd say do it if it's what you really want to do. I've moved to different states on a whim and was successful. Just make sure you plan carefully and have a good back up plan in case it's not what you want after all.

Excellent advice Phemomena. :)

A friend of mine did this for a while. Had a great time and enjoyed what he did, however he said the money was not great and stability is really not there. But if you are young and have no obligations why not, all you will do is experience some new people and places, and it looks good on a resume.

want a partner in crime?... i am ready to leave too :)

i think it is a great idea... had a friend that did it and said it was awesome and a cheap way to see the world.. your room and board is paid for as well as meals... so you don't have many expenses, but you don't make much either... i think it balances out nicely though.. a fair trade

Thanks to all. You've given some great advice and definitely given me something to think about, especially you Phenomena, that really helped. There's always something I seem to overlook.

As far as a partner goes supergirl, just name the date and place and I'm there:D

no probs...

if i haven't scared you away from it (and i hope i haven't)

if you decide to go, make sure you do things like...

talk to the staff, see if they're happy (this should be true of any place you choose to work regardless of location)

check contract details, i've heard of things like people working in resorts having to eat yesterday's (leftover) food, not being allowed guests to their rooms, not having access to laundry facilities in the resort and having to drive to town (which may be an hour or more away) to do their laundry...

check for things like technology... you say you have no attachments to the US, but that'll be true until you get homesick and want to call/email home... some places have no internet access and phones are a luxury (and also very pricey)

umm... i'm sure there's lots more to consider and if you look at your current life, identify the things that you cant do without and make sure they are available to you, you'll be fine...

good luck... and keep us posted, maybe i'll come see ya where ever you end up.... i need a vacation...
