How many of you have a physically demanding job?

just curious how many of you have a physically demanding job. and also, does is affect your workouts?

Switch jobs man, very hard to gain when you're sweating out your calories at work. Unless you're on juice, then you're just getting cut up.

Depends on the time of year pretty much for me Lee. I'm a full time fishing & hunting guide. During hunting season lots of hiking some steep arse mountains and then packing out game certainly takes a toll on your body and makes hitting the gym tough,..but still make it.
Right now its fishing season and I'm currently running my jet sled, cake work other than the elements. In the Spring motors are prohibited where I guide fishing trips so I'm rowing a 16' Drift Boat down rivers for generally 16 to 18 miles with 2-3 people in it. Thats a full body, full day, workout making gym time tough as well,..but again I still go.
Only thing that really sucks for gym time in my job is spending June & July in a remote fishing camp in Alaska that I manage. Work with power bands when I can up there and do Swiss Ball work as well but miss the hell outta the gym.

sounds rough Johnny. I just moved here to Houston from Alaska a few months back, i know how sucky it is, hehe.

yomama, do you think it would affect gains that much? its not a super hard job or anything, but im on my feet using tools all day, sometimes moving big shit, like 75+ pounds for an hour or so. but i didnt think my job was all that rough, maybe just cuz im young.

I'm on my feet all day and it is physical, but what wears me down more is that I rotate shifts. It's hard to work days early in the week, then nights at the end. Very hard to stay in a routine.

I work as a firefighter/paramedic; some of the nasty demands are obvious, and the next day I'll be sore in odd places. Doesn't usually stop me from hitting the gym, but makes it hard to train at 100%

Some of the not-so-obvious drawbacks include shiftwork, which can make next-day workouts not even happen. Some guys I know will workout while even severely sleep-deprived, but I need my Zzz's.

Going from a complete rest to near maximal exertion in less than a few minutes can wreck havoc on the body, also. Just my theory, but that's why I figure the #1 killer of firefighters is cardiac-related.

i was thinking as long as i get 8 hours of sleep or more a night i should be just fine for an 8 hour day and a good workout. just wanted some input, thx guys.

i work as a painter/remodeler....during the summer months its more hectic...working 12hr days then trying to hit the gym....caffeine has been my friend thats for sure...and eating anything in sight

big4life......I know what you are going through. I work on my feet all day at an auto plant. We rotated shifts for 5 years and I have been on days since (4 more). It does tend to wear me out, but only if I am ill or not feeling good. I don't get a lot of DOMS with powerlifting....but when I do I am miserable.

Yeah guys I know what you all mean. I'm in a cabinet shop right now and in summers it reaches about 120 degrees in there and in the winters around 40s to 30s. But it's VERY physically demanding all day every day. Moving heavy cabinets and loading and unloading trailers full of plywood, sometimes 100 sheets or more at a time. It's hindering to me b/c I sweat a lot and burn a lot of my workouts out at work, meaning when I get home I'm exhausted and if I workout before work I'm even more tired and feel like my workout was useless. Anyway it's tough and it sucks but I'm about to hit up an office job forever so it's all good!

i just cant wait til the summer when its 100 outside and 120 inside our warehouse. ill be sweatin my big ass away in no time, lol.
