How many dimensions are plausible?

Based on Superstring theory? Not silly string although it is anecdotal.

I am reading one book that postulates with some proof that before the big bang there were 10 unified dimensions. When the BB happened, as the Universe started to cool 4 unified into our universe and 6 into another.

Have at it!

no...we live in the four dimensional universe, length, width, height, and time. I have no idea what a six-dimensional universe would be.

beats me... it was our universe prior to the BB

well I could write the tensor dynamical equations, but then I don't understand them anymore than probably most of us here.

on the other hand, I also figured that maybe the missing mass or "dark" matter in the Universe was this 6 dimensional universe. While we can't directly detect it, we can infer its existence by the effect it has on the observable Universe.

ok so how did the little ball that turned into the big bang get "there" in the first place and how did "there" get there? hmmmmmmmmmm

You know, I have been asking that myself! What the hell was outside it? Someone is gonna say God, I know it.

That is as mind boggling as what is outside the Universer? I mean it has a boundary and we know where it is, so what is beyond that?

ive read that the universe will one day start collapsing back into the little ball again, now what if that has already happened and we have had numerous big bangs already and we are living the same life over and over?? hmmmmmmmmmm this is known as the theory of hammytivity

I think string theory is going to turn traditional science on its ear.It is the starting point for understanding the strangeness of our world/Universe IMO.I believe that it very well may be able to validate the existence or possibility of continuance of the life force/intelligence beyond expiration of the biological body.I believe ghosts/spirits may very well reside in these outer dimensions/parallel realities.Very exciting stuff.

The lasted I read on the subject led many physicists to believe that universe will never collapse but keep expanding. I also saw a documentary on this a while ago which supported this idea more then the possibility of it collapsing or reaching a stable point.

It all depends on the amount of matter in the Universe. If the missing matter is part of the 6 dimensional space that is undetectable by standard methods, then it will be closed and collapse on itself.

I heard some science people say that some peopel believe it could be above 15 dimensions.

we live in a 3 dimensional world...time is not a dimension...take a box. we see 3 dimensions that we can confirm...the 4th dimension would allow you to see inside the box and confirm whats inside, if anything, without damage to the box....

What if you found a portal through parallel worlds?
What if you could slide to a thousand diffrent dimensions?
Where it's the same year and you're the same person but everything else is diffrent?
And What if you can't find you're way home?
SLIDERS!

Time is the fourth dimension. that is why we live in a four dimensional world. I don't make it up i just report it

Last I read it was 8, but it was an older book. I think it was Steven Hawking, "Quest for a Theory of Everything", but I could be wrong on that being the right book. Oh well.

chesty...i stand firm....time is relative and is not a dimension. my example is valid.

We already know time is realative orb. Was that evening being debated?

I've spent years and years wondering about some of these things while laying in bed trying to sleep at night. WHat I've found is, we get no answers, and it just keeps you awake. Yet I still catch myself doing it at times... unfortunately my mind is racing all the time, even when I do not desire it too...

no...he was stating that "TIME" was a dimension...there are 10 dimensions....we live here in the 3rd. the 10th dimension depects "oneness" total enlightenment....

SS theory states that the other n-4 dimensions are 'curled up' into the 4 dimensions that we currently reside in.

And yes, time is a dimension. A dimension is a degree of freedom. We exist in 3 space dimensions and 1 time dimension collectively known as 'spacetime'. Stating that time is not a dimension will serve only get one laughed at in the scientific world.

Don't take string theory too seriously. String theory, M-theory, LQG, twistor theory, and every other theory that attempts to unify quantum mechanics with general relativity into a quantum theory of gravity are only in their infancy. The theoretical has far exceeded experimental capabilities here.

Its a pity is it not? It all seems very interesting, but we have to unveil the secrets of our own dimensions in our universe first. There is so much to learn, before we start looking into the other six.

"I do not know what i may appear to the world; but to myself i seem to have been only like a boy playing on the seashore, and diverting in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me."

- Sir Isaac Newton.

With all due respect to the theorist, its over the top of my head (whooosh!!), therefore i conclude it to be bullshit.

I think I remember reading our universe being a 3+1 universe, 3 dimensions and one linear dimension of time? ( can't believe I remember this crap)

Bullshit?? not hardly...Brilliant.
