One of my dealers told me they have engine fire problems. I work for an auto finance/lease company.

My dad is looking to buy a 2001 Range Rover SE. The price seems fair (35 000$ I think for less than 30k km) but I've heard many bad things about it. I truly think he should rather invest in some BMW X5 but anyway. Anybody owns or owned one ? Heard good or bad about it ?

Got one at the minute ( well my mum and dad have haha) It seems very good, they got the HSE which has a few more extras I think.

Not too familiar with the Escalade, but for quintisential English class you can't beat a Range Rover. When you are in one it is fine to refer to people as "You there!" and use the phrase "I say", if you use or would like to use these phrases more often then get the British car.

range rovers are the best SUV on the market more or less. Its hard to consider them an SUV though because they're more rugged than the "cars" that just happen to look like SUVs(i.e. X5). They definetely blow an x5, ML 320 (or even ML55), and escalade out of the water. OF course they're more expensive (if you get one it'd have to be an HSE 4.6)..but interior and option wise...theres not much that compares. As far as engine problem goes...the older models have had that problem but it was pretty much corrected after 2000 or 2001. my sister has a 2002 4.6 and has had absolutely no problems...

they have more mechanical issues than just about any suv out there. I'd go for the x5 out of all the above. Watch out though, x5's are going to go through a body change in like 2-3 yrs. I wouldn't recommend buying at this point to the the drop associated in resale on cars with recent body changes.
