RyanH

New member
According to the AKC, the following were the most popular dogs in the U.S for the year 2000:

1. Labrador retrievers. 172,841 registrations, up 12 percent

2. Golden retrievers. 66,300 registrations, up 6 percent

3. German shepherds. 57,660 registrations, up 1 %

4. Dachshunds. 54,773 registrations, up 8 percent

5. Beagles. 52,026 registrations, up 6 percent

6. Poodles. 45,868 registrations, up 1 percent

7. Yorkshire terriers. 43,868 registrations, up 7 percent

8. Chihuahuas. 43,096 registrations, up 17 percent

9. Boxers. 38,803 registrations, up 11 percent

10. Shih Tzus. 37,599, up 9 percent

I like labs alot, but if I get a bigger place, I'd really like to get a German Shepherd.

I've heard they can't be matched in terms of intelligence.

My dog used to be the number one dog in america, untill it got a bad rap. I have a Doberman Pinscher, her name is Princess. She is the shit, she is not mean to people or dogs, just everything else. She is just really scary looking and thats about it. O well if she's not the most popular dog, she is still my baby.
Cool thread, where did you find this info. ?
Do they have info. on why or how they got these percentages.

I like Doberman's....why do they get a bad rap?

I raise JRT's....Gotta love their energy, plus they keep the area around my cabin free of critter's.....heh heh heh

I've considered getting a JRT but I've heard they'll tear your place apart........abundant energy....

Jack's are crazy energy....but not too destructive....they are cool, my friends one does back flips:)

I got a pitt mutt....she is destructive, not so on purpose, but with the muscle and bone structure she slams into alot of stuff and breaks it.

Dobermans get a bad rap because they used to be the cop dog, and they were the dogs that were origanally on the beware of dog signs that everybody has on there fence. It depicted them as mean attack dogs, also they were always used in movies as watch dogs, like crocodile dundee, ect.......
Even the new movie Cats and Dogs shows the Doberman, but is shows them as the Army of the dogs, they were like Marines. It was kinda funny, but they are really not like that unless you train them to be, which goes for any dog.
Thats the main reason they have a bad rap.
O yeah and they look intimidating as hell, lol!!!!!

my family has a history of owning german shepards....but we got a cross breed witgh some german shepard, some jack russel and i believe somewhere in the dogs lineage there is a doberman too.

Ryan,

The more time you spend with them, the less trouble they get into...per sey...they are very loyal to their owners, and there is nothing they won't do to defend their masters....smart as hell too...:)

Cornhole man, if thats you in the pic, you have the perfect dog. Like I mean you two look like you have a lot of fun together.
How heavy is he, and how old.
Bad Ass dog bro.

...I was 230 in the pic, and he makes me look pretty small. He was about 150-155 in the pic taken last year. He will be 5 in a couple of months.

Unbelieveable temperament. He was chosen based on his fathers disposition. Rotts are VERY HIGHLY trainable and highly intelligent. Atlas will still do stuff that amazes me like wiping his feet before he comes in if it is raining out.(He's indoor all the way).

Great dog.

1. Labrador retrievers-great all purpse dogs, smart, good around kids, no major problems

2. Golden retrievers-ditto to lab, but shed too much

3. German shepherds-very intelligent, very obeidient, white ones are overbred for small bloodline so they have history of mental flaws

4. Dachshunds-good temperment, just have to be careful with their backs

5. Beagles-bark bark bark bark bark....howl

6. Poodles-very intelligent, but ugly as hell, plus grooming required

7. Yorkshire terriers-nice, mod energy little dogs

8. Chihuahuas-pretty smart, obedient

9. Boxers-extremely hyper, high incidence of cancer and skin problems

10. Shih Tzus- eye gook, grooming required, nice, not intelligent

11. Pitt Bulls- extremly loyal, and obedient, and VERY protective

12. Bull Mastiffs- very docile, low energy, very loyal

13. Rotties- very obdeient, very loyal, not too intelligent, history of hip problems

14. Irish Wolfhound- docile, very intelligent, loyal, obedient, no shedding

15.Greyhound-EXTREMLY obedient, docile to hyper very adapting to enviornment

(I've worked with vets for over 6 years now...some of my findings)

Corn...I knew you were gonna not like that. Rottis I love, don't get me wrong, they are very obiedient, but in my experience they are not very intelligent....don't compare to sheperds, dobermans, or even jack russels intelligence wise.

Yo Quero a bite outa yo Ass...

8. Chihuahuas-pretty smart, obedient

We have one that's in charge at our house...Kicks ass on the bigger inside dog.
She Acts Bad Ass toward the Yellow Lab / Shepherd mix outside dog(Mine) thru the window until she gets her ass thrown in the backyard with her.

The Lab/Shep. mix is the perfect combo. All the best of both breeds.
Intelligence of both, Calm of the Lab and a toning down on the Shep Aggression while still being protective of the house and family...

Well...

I had deleted that because every breed has good examples and bad examples of all traits.

I simply know that I have seem Atlas do things that I have never seen another dog do. He wipes his feet before he comes in from outside. He has about 7 or 8 different chew toys and he knows the name of each one, you tell him to get a specific toy and he will. If he hears the cats fighting, he will go break it up.

You've never owned a Rottie, have you??

Not my own, but my roomate I lived with owned one. Intelligent, for me anyhow, is not only learning ability of word object reconginition, etc, these type of repeative pattern behavoirs, but also (and I know this will not sit well with certain people) but the ability of an animal to access a situation and adapt accordingly.....probmatic thinking. This is what makes the shepard such an intelligent dog.......they are incredible.

Why do you guys think that Collies/Shelties aren't on the list.....they are apparently pretty smart also....?

Gorgeous dog Cornholio.

the best breed of dog in the world is the australian shepherd. they are so smart that they have been known to do kids homework for them. they are so deadly you must register them as deadly weapons. they are the perfect killers.

well these are registered. And the registers go up as the breeders do. SO the greater demand by the public for a certian breed the more people wanna get their dogs registered and breed to make money. For example, after that movie As Good As It Gets....a demand for Brussels Griffons went up, more opportunity to make money more breeders gettting registered. Its just like sales for any industy.

LOL!!!!

I just thought of something:

Your dog runs into a sliding glass-door doing about 100 mph - and you call my dog stupid??

LMAO!!!

I was over at a friend's house the other day, he had a great dane in an apartment....

I thought it was a really stupid thing to do.

But, Cornholio, I guess you keep your rott inside mostly, right? I know some people who keep Germans inside apts.

Ryan - thank you sir. I just noticed that we are neighbors.

Atlas is indoor. But we have a good sized home(~2600 ft) he has the run of it.

i taught her to attack myself. its funny to yell "attack!!" and point at someone and watch them run as she goes after them. she knows not to hurt them.

Aren't the two dogs notoriously known to "turn" on their owners---rotts, pittbulls? Are there any others?

I have a jack russell. I have had chiuiauas (spelt wrong), labs, corgis as well as others.
She is mad and never keeps still.

She would tear any other dog apart!:p

That's really good. Teach them to run down their prey.

I have a 2 1/2 year old female Rotty..... great dog and I love her.

She just put herself on a cycle of Anavar..... this could get expensive:(

Where do Great Danes land on the list?

We've always had them, great with kids and great watch dogs (who would fuck with one).

i'm with peyote... former number one...

they got a bad rap cuz they are very territorial and will give their lives for their owners... if you come in their house they will protect it...

they are 5th on the "smartest dogs" list, so they are easily trained as a guard dog...

that adds to "bad reps".... its bullshit though, cuz they act like a baby with their owners.

This is very true but I raise English Mastiffs because I prefer the hound shaped head to that of the bull. Plus the English Mastiff are generally larger than the Bull. All ofour bitches are just under 200 pounds. The last male that I had was 200+. And the newest male pup that we got, if he grows into his feet, is gonna easily be over 200lbs.

I have zero complaints about any of my dogs save one...they slobber on ya. It is something that is common of all big dogs and there really is no way around it. However it is a small price to pay for a dog that would protect you at any cost and yet is safe to have around children as well...I love mastiffs

My dog is almost identical to this one, only a tad bigger.

He likes to chew on pregnant women's fetuses and drink their amniotic fluid. I don't know where he gets it from, but he's a good dog.

Corn...your taking what I said WAY 2 personal. I didn't say they were stupid, just that they are not IN MY EXPERIENCE WITH ROTTIS AND ROTTI BREEDERS as intelligent as other dogs like shepards and dobbies. ANd I never said Pitt Bull were very intelligent either. I'm sure you got a GENIUS dear.
