How does the PUBLIC health system work in the US?

So I've read hundreds of articles about your health system, I've asked my parents and brothers (who are US citizens, I've lived in NYC), I've watched documentals... and I've understooden nothing...

I mean, do you pay taxes to the State or the Federal Government for health? I know about the property taxes and how they are used in different fields, but do you pay directly for sanity?

What happens if tomorrow you lost your job and you have an accident? Will you die in the door of a private clinic? I think the film John Q has done much harm...

Why some people doesn't have a health insurance? Are they covered for the public health?

There is no public health system in the US.

There are programs for the old and those who have severe health problems and other programs for the extremely poor.

Healthy, working people get private health insurance, either they pay for it themselves or they get it through an employer who may pay all or some percentage of the premiums.

Some people have nothing and just take their chances, which can mean a huge bill if they have an accident and have to go to the hospital.

If you lose your job and insurance and then have a catostrapic event, you'll be treated at the hospital and then receive a bill for $50-100k and have to declare personal bankruptcy after you default on the payments....unless you are an illegal alien and then youll just be treated for free and the rest of us will pay the bill with our taxes. But, the free market approach does mean that we have all of the best doctors in the world in the U.S. so as long as you have insurance there is no better healthcare in the world.

There are also different kinds of coverages, I had the option of low monthly payments and low deductibles with 80/20 or 90/10 coverage or high deductible and monthly payments with 100% coverage, that last one is what I picked, then hubby had emergency surgery that was about $60k, so glad I wasnt stuck with 20% of that :worried:

it's called medicaid.. if you can't afford to pay in your example, it's free.. plain and simple, do you get to go private practice?? no, you get to sit and wait your turn with the others people that can't or won't afford to pay their own way..

no one goes without health care in the usa... don't believe me?? go to prison and get the medical care the "state" says they must provide..

Thats definitely not true. Not everyone qualifies for medicare. My brother is on it because hes on disability and took 2 years and paying for an expensive lawyer to get it done for him otherwise he wouldnt have it

Basically, it's a mess. There is a fundamental law which states that a hospital or clinic must save your life with or without money or insurance, but it's hit & miss as to what quality of care you might get. If you're an adult and not been declared needy and become a state or county welfare payee, and if you can't afford anything, and you don't own anything, you can go to the county hospital in most places, and get care. If they find out you have anything (bank account, car, etc.), they'll try to take it if you can't pay whatever the assessed bill is. A private hospital will take you in, and save your life, but will ship you out to the nearest county hospital asap.

Insurance isn't much better, and can even be worse, since you might have to wait and wait to get care, while they hash it all out in some office someplace. Obamacare is making it worse yet, so I don't know what's going to happen later on.

My advice: Keep some $ ahead in a savings account, and only touch it for medical care, and that way, you pay far less for what you need (usually cash price for medical care & surgery = 10% of the "billed price" in hospitals and for tests. )

No public health policy

Unemployed - handouts or no insurance

Employed - company pays insurance or you pay yourself money out of your check every pay period

Old- gov programs

The long and short it's not perfect Insurance companies are in business to make mo eu but at least it gives you the choice of care and to some level the quality of care you receive.

Actually there are very few companies that pay for your insurance. They subsidize it and the ammount that companies subsidize is getting less and employees are paying more of their own insurance cost

True ill edit mine I work for a private company who luckily pays mine but your right most companies won't pay the whole thing.

I don't think my husband's company pays anything, if they do it's very little (and he works for a global Fortune 500, has for over 35 years). Our weekly premium for health insurance is $109 and for dental $17, just for two of us.

I think I pay $300/mo for me and my wife but I have the middle tier plan out of 5 choices my company offers

My company pays for me, but My wife and kids cost me an Extra $500/month. Plus we have a shit plan, it's basically a 30% discount off of all services. We do have a $6K max out-of-pocket each year.

I paid about 160 for self with a $2000 deductible and 100% coverage after deductible, $30 for family Dr, $60 -30 for specialists and 100% mental health coverage, now it is the same but $320 self and spouse with $4000 deductible

280 a month for medical, dental, vision coverage for a family of 4. 250 family deductible.

Recent cesarean section delivery cost about 200 out of pocket.

I get hydros for free..fuck I love Russia

wow that's pretty damn fantastic!
He's a doctor, it's kind of a perk. Our premiums would be doubled if we had four people on it, although after four people it would stop increasing. So what we'd pay a week for a family, he pays a month. Oh, I forgot, our deductible is $3,000, each.
