How does chalk help?

I was wondering how chalking up one's legs for a deadlift, or one's back for a squat helps. Also, how much of a benefit do you see from using chalk on your hands for deads? It helps prevent bar slippage from sweat for me.
 
You wouldn't chalk your legs for a deadlift; you'd use powder to make the bar slide up them more easily. You'd chalk your hands.
 
I use chalk for deadlifts, it makes a big difference. Basically just prevents the bar from slipping, since my hands get kinda sweaty. I use chalk for pulldowns, and dumbbell rows as well.
