How do you strengthen your hips???

Aren't hips just like any other joint? I mean you can't strengthen your elbow, you strenghten your triceps, biceps and forearms muscles. So when people say that they are doing an exercise to strengthen their hips do they really mean their glutes/hams/quads?

Or do I know a lot less about the human body than I thought?
 
glutes and hams...yes.

favorites of mine:
hip abduction (i use a machine, some use bands)
the exercises themselves: deads (sumo), RDL's, pause squats, ATF squats, rev. hypers, GHR's. etc.

that depends on who you are..
if youre a PL squatter than hips are a very important muscle to develop..if your a BB'er than your hips will get worked through most leg work ( as long as youre doing some kind of squats)
 
"hips" is a general term meaning the musculature the stabilizes your knees (keeps them from coming in..ad/abductors), and extends the hips (glutes, hams)
