How do you send SMS messages?

To people outside of the US? Can you send messages via email or just cell phones

You can email a SMS text message to a phone. I have our server set up to send me an SMS text if something critical goes down.

I also email my SO SMS messages from gmail to [email protected]. I get the response back via email. I don't have unlimited text messaging but I don't get charged if I do it thru email. Of course I have to be at the computer.

So what if someone gives you there cell number - how do I know what the provider is
