How do you know if....?

Last night I trained my shoulders, as usual on a wednesday night.

I warmed up as usual and started my first exercise, behind the neck presses. After the 3rd set I felt my right shoulder aching not an ache that sujested a tired muscle but an uncomfortable ache.

I then moved onto dumbell side raises, the same ache occured after this but wouldn't go away afterwards.

My question is how do you know that you have a rotacuff injury, or a pull, or strain.

Has anybody here suffered a rotacuff injury. what was your recovery time.

My training is going well, i really don't want a lay off.

Thanks

I have hurt mine on two occasions. The 2nd time was both cuffs at the same time...

I knew that I hurt them...because I had to carry my hands in my pockets for about 3 weeks...

Stretch, do some AR (light active recovery), and rest. It is better to back off (A LOT) and recover than push it and spend the next 10 weeks doing NOTHING.

When you tear your cuffs...you can't press, push, pull, row, chin, curl, extend, squat, etc... I rode a stationary bicycle a lot though...

Thanks mate,

Just what i didn't want to read. Do you think it sounds like a roatacuff injury.

And why the hell are you up, it must be late there.

Start taking NSAIDS NOW!!!!

I really do not know what the diagnosis of your shoulders are...just keep them fully out of harms way.

I'm actually working on homework while doing laundry...about to take some food to bed. It is 3:20 am here.

I was out for a year with my rottator cuff, its very easy to damage! Do you still have pain today, where does it hurt?

And what position / movement makes it hurt more?

Hi FatRat how you doing?

No pain at all today mate, I thought i was going to suffer, i'm doing my back later on so i'll have to wait and see.

Didn't know if the rotacuff just went, or if it was over a period of time.

How long was your lay off

Mornin!

I was out for a year mate, not a good time. Basically tried to train through it, which made it worse, then took to short a time out and re-injured it again quickly, trying to come back to hard, finally had to take a couple of months out completely, get deep tissue massage (hurts like f'ing hell), acupuncture, ultrasound, the works, then came back with stretching and rotator cuff strengthening work for a couple of months before getting back into the weights gradually.

If you are ok, then feel lucky, but use it as a wake up call! Drop the behind neck stuff, and maybe incorporate some rotator cuff exercises in to your routine...

Thanks for the post mate,

Wow you were out for a while, did you lose much?

You say drop the presses, but what should i do instead as a mass builder for the shoulders.

where do you train Fatrat

I’m not sure how much I lost, you kind of don’t want to get on the scale when u are out for that long! Worked on cardio and did some legs so wasn’t as bad as it could have been. It was 5 years ago now, so just glad it got fixed up in the end.

Definitely drop the behind head presses, especially if you got a scare. It might have been impingement, which you got away with, but can lead to problems if it causes inflammation. Press to the front, or use dumbbells as your mass builder, your shoulders will love you for it! :)

I’m down in Surrey mate, was at Uni at Loughborough tho, so know the midlands a bit, where u at?

Thanks for the advice mate, sounds like i was lucky this time.

Thinking about it I have been using heavier and haevier weight for behind the neck, so it was probably a warning.

I will switch to press at the front.

Stoke-on-Trent i'm from you know Robbie Williams, Stanley Matthews, Nick Hancock, Anthea Turner and EnglishBeef...lol we are all from here.

EnglishBeef, I'd consider doing an online search about rotator cuff injuries or visiting a doctor if pain persists. A rotator cuff tear would definately keep you out of the weight room for awhile. Also, microtrauma to the cuff could exist. This also results in local inflammation and poor function and may lead to impingement. If I were you, I'd do an online search for the "empty can position and rotator" cuff and see how that muscle test feels.

As you were posting that Pwr i was doing just that, Thanks mate. here have some Karma for the informative post cheers

Are you another stay up late yank
