How do you feel about affirmative action?

I feel that the most qualified in any area should be promoted or admitted or whatever the case may be. To allow someone to advance basedon race is wrong! And, society as a whole pays the price in the long run because we don't get the best.

What difference does it matter how someone got a job if they can't perform well enough to keep it?

We all know that "favoritism" has been around forever. So why bitch about why you got passed over if you know your worth? Go find someplace else to work where you WILL BE valued.

Me, personally, if I get my foot in the door because of who I know - so? It will be UP TO ME to keep that job. Right?

So I don't have an issue with such programs. If you suck you will get fired regardless. Next!!!

I've never used it to my advantage and I never will. That doesn't mean that I think it's total crap, either.

I have seen first hand how a person's life has changed for the better, BECAUSE of the opportunities given to them through affirmative action. They would have been passed over otherwise, regardless of their 'qualifications.'

The problem is caused by the lazier individuals who see it as an easy way out of working for what they want/need in life.

how would you feel about a 110 lb asian female fireman being responsible for hauling your unconscious butt up a flight of stairs from the basement with the house on fire??

+1.....the only good thing about Obama getting elected is that black people and every other minority wouldnt have a fucking excuse anymore.....

Then, they can take their outdated uneeded policy and shove it up their asses....

I think the goal is good but in practice on an individual level its bad.

Maybe some of you need more education and have low qualifications , because I fail to see how this issue could be affecting the numbers of people who keep commenting on it.

Dude i was so overqualified when I lost my job at the fry machine to that pregnant, lesbian, hispanic woman with one leg!!

Post-graduate schools are the worst abusers of affirmative action when it comes to admissions. I brought this topic up because I just read Michelle O'Bama's thesis from her Senior year at Princeton.

It's the worst when it comes to financial aid. All of the minorities I went to grad school with were "consortium students." Essentially, this "consortium" paid their way through business school. The qualification for "minority" standing was pretty fluid too. It was almost like the old "drop of blood" standard. You could be a white boy with a bitchin' tan, but if you could produce a Navajo grandfather, your education was on the house! By contrast, if you were unlucky enough to be Caucasian, you had to incur tens of thousands of dollars worth of debt to go to school. Student loans are the new "white man's burden" so far as I'm concerned.

That is completely NOT how AA works at all.

Absolutely. It is a racist policy no matter how you spin it.

If I were black affirmative action would embarress me. I think it insults black people, that the government has to pass laws that handicap others to make it easier to succeed.

I was gonna say nice avatar assuming that's you...

Anyway it's interesting that you draw a parallel to affirmative Action and Aids... Unfortunately AIDS is a terminal disease which generally kills those who cannot afford the drug mixtures to control it

How many people has Affirmative Action killed?

Yep fucking right. "Minority Challenge'' scholarships are really really fair. A good portion of the guys in my dorm who had them werent there after a year. Oh well, the paper mill always has jobs.

Try paying property taxes to fund shitty schools in Jackson county MO... like failed magnet schools.

I'm not sure how to feel on that issue

There's a side of me that agrees with home owners paying property taxes only for the school in the district they live. One the other side with the property taxes being split equally to all the schools in the county would mean equal funding. But as you say , you'd be paying taxes for schools that your kids can't attend due to the school district zoning. Trying to mix wealthy and poor areas into one district would make rich and poor go to the same school and equalize funding as well.

I dunno

But then again if you're married without kids, where should your taxes go?

Still not a life or death issue....

Yes it is me, although its a little blurry.

I was just joshing ya bro. You know about me and my smartass ways.

But my point was that AA is a subject I think anyone is allowed to debate, even if it hasnt affected them personally.

Ooh , OK

I was being really sarcastic myself when I told people to get more education, so I can understand. I guess cynical is a better word. And I was startin mess at the same time. The again so was gotmilk

Possibly more than we know.

When I was in the USAF there were civilian ART's (Air Reserve Technicians) who served in a civilian capacity during the week and typical Reservist duties in the AF (1 week per month ... 2 weeks active duty per year).

Due to "quotas" not necessarily the best canidate was selected for leadership positions, which in the case of war could result in the loss of life.

Sigh, that's not even a real scenario.... What do Air Reserve Technicians do and how could "quotas" (Assuming the Air Force was instituting a quota system) {Which you don't know for sure} get people killed in this position?

And who's to say
1. the quota put in a lesser qualified candidate
2 that the "most qualified" woudln't have been killed or gotten others killed

I would agree with this if it were on a per state basis.. so ALL of the property taxes in California would go to a general fund to pay for ALL of the schools in California..

but I would also only agree with it.. if those that opted out of the school system could get a tax credit for putting their kids in private schools if they so choose.

People should not be forced through proxy of propert tax to put their kids in public schools.

Want don't you understand?

Aren't you, or wasn't you a Federal employee? Are you disputing AA measure in promoting?

You think it's a good idea to have a leader without the best qualifications during war?

How does any of that relate to Air Reserve Technicians?
All I know is in infantry the dude with the highest asvab probably won't be the best soldier....

Bullets kill people weather they got 92 asvab or 22 asvabs....

So what your point?

So what your point?

ART's are full time Federal employees during the week, but if deployed, like any other Reservist they become full time airmen.

Why are you arguing that the best qualified canidate regardless of any quota should be selected to lead?

I guess what I was trying to say is in a certain job there are ways of determining "who is the most qualified"

I don't know how you determine that as an ART
I do know how that's determined in Infantry and there ain't no racial quota involved in that process....

Either you kick ass or you get your ass kicked... literally

Of course you can't predict who will perform best in war conditions from an application, but in the application or selection process race should not be an issue.

+2...best response thus far, imho...

I've seen it help those who were unfairly put down because those in power didn't believe in hiring chinese (even though they were the most qualified for the positions...at the time) and loved the native americans. I've seen it hurt when the people in power switched to chinese and they started hiring any bruce lee clone even thought they didn't have the qualifications that another mixed group of people had..
