How do steroids affect the kidneys?

Why do people keep saying that steroids are safe, when bodybuilders so often get serious problems with heart andkidneys? I remember there was even one bodybuilder who died of kidneyfailure! What compounds should one avoid using in order to stayhealthy?

Steroids are not safe. The blood pressure being elevated for too long will cause kidney failure. Taking specific steroids and specific doses for certain people can cause bp to rise and depending on how long you stress kidneys can leave you on dialysis or dead. Most people know that a major function of the kidneys is to remove waste products and excess fluid from the body. These waste products and excess fluid are removed through the urine. The production of urine involves highly complex steps of excretion and re-absorption.

Thats why if you take any type of steroid. You must get blood work to see how the dosages and types of steroids are effecting you specifically. With hormones there is no guarantee that they effect us equally the same. I hope I helped

: The major deactivation and elimination pathway of AASs is through glucuronide conjugation, chiefly catalyzed by the UGT2B17 enzyme, followed by excretion in urine. Excretion of steroids is affected in individuals with a deletion mutation in the UGT2B17 gene. We hypothesize that UGT2B17 deficient individuals are more vulnerable to developing renal disorders with prolonged use of AAS owing to increases in body mass index and possible direct toxic effects of steroids on the kidneys. Elevated serum levels of biologically active steroids due to inadequate elimination can lead to prolonged muscle build up. An increase in body mass index may cause renal injuries due to sustained elevated glomerular pressure and flow rate.

: In people with normal kidney function, a high-protein intake isn’t usually a problem. But a high-protein diet does increase renal blood flow, which would increase the GFR. If the kidneys are already working overtime to handle the increased demands placed on them by body size, a high-protein diet may exacerbate this. Likewise, in patients who have documented renal disease, a lower protein intake does remove some stress from the kidneys. Within normal ranges, protein intake is unlikely to be a major player, but for someone who weighs 300 pounds and whose kidneys are already working pretty hard, eating 550 grams of protein a day is just another added stress.

when you weight train often you constantly break down and repair muscle.. this causes elevated kidney issues, but it doesn't mean your kidney's are really being damaged

lots of people have kidney problems out there, not just bodybuilders. i have used steroids for about a decade now and my blood work is perfect up and down the line.. bp is 117 over 67. so there is a difference between abuse and using them correctly

I think that in the end of the day, any activity can affect our kidneys, liver, and any other organ. What actually makes a difference, are the ancillaries, and the care you take of yourself. Just as @stevesmi, you can still have perfectly healthy organs if you take care of yourself. Anything can be harmful if moderation is not there.

This is truth . Moderate or low dose cycles have delivered hard earned but moderately safe gains

Steroids or no Steroids, once you start getting into super heavy weights with lean muscle you are going to strain every organ in your body.

The guys that abuse steroids and rec drugs are the ones that end up with kidney and heart issues. If you use steroids responsibly with moderate doses, cycle on and off properly, recover, and have an overall healthy diet then you are not the guy that is going to die of kidney failure. Most people eat garbage food and don't exercise......those are the real people at risk.
