How do I go about returning a lost wallet?

I was getting back in my car to come home for the evening and there is a wallet beside the car. The street was empty and noone about so wasn't sure if its owner was still around but it was pretty quit. Anyways I decided to get it and return it.

Its loaded, this girl has everything in the wallet, DL #, SS card, over $200 in cash, CC, gift cards, and bunch of other cards, I didn't find anything with a number. Should I mail them a letter at her address on her DL #? Turn it in to the Police Station?

Poor girl must be frantic right now.

A guy returned my wallet at the gym once. I asked who and gave him the 50 bucks that he left in it.

If she seems well off she may give u half the cash or something.

With so many people using cell phones exclusively it's hard to 411 a phone number anymore, which sucks.

The old rule used to be drop it in a mailbox but ... well, honestly I don't trust USPS anymore. If you give it to the police they're going to hold it until she comes looking for it and who checks with the cops when they lose their wallet? If it's not claimed (90 days, I think) I dunno what happens to it.

If the address is close to you, I'd say swing by. If it's a house, stuff it in the mail slot (if there is one). Otherwise leave a note with your phone number and you can arrange to meet her. It'll get back to her faster.

Yeah, kind of a PITA, but I figure this is the kind of karma that pays forward.

We were coming home from vacation one time and my husband spotted a wallet lying in the road, called the owner (they had a "real" phone so he could 411 it) waited in an empty parking lot hitched to a trailer with a car full of kids for them to come meet us. It's all good.

My wife left her wallet in a shopping cart one time. The woman who found it brought it to the house. I was blown away that somebody actually was nice enough to do that anymore.

yea. I was gonna take it to a police station thursday night when I found it but I was so tired and layed down in bed for a bit and promptly fell asleep.

I did look up the addy on google, no number but google maps showed it was too far away so I just took a little detour that morning and returned it.

I find peoples wallets constantly at work...Ive gotten really good at tracking down owners

our pd actually goes out of their way to return things to people
they found my husbands cell phone on the side of the road (how??) and the thing had been rained on..so they called verizon who told them who the phone belonged to
got our home number....then dropped it off at our house
it was destroyed but the sd card a ton of pics of the kids on it so it was still really cool to get it back
