How do androgens work?

Ok Chemists and Gurus here is my question:

What is it that makes androgens "work" instantly when it comes to strength. I mean, why is it that you can take a single dose of a highly androgenic steroid and instantly have more strength? The muscle fibers are the same size and shape they were hours before, yet now you are able to lift more. What exactly takes place in the tissue to make this possible?

Muscle size has little to do with strength. Strength comes from the central nervous system. Over time with exercise, your body activates more motor units and even changes the timing or order that the motor units activate to make someone stronger. The Sceince and Practice of Strength explains this stuff in some great detail....Hypertrophy is like a side effect of weight training, and just because you have a lot of muscle, it doesn't mean you are strong........

What I am trying to say is that strength comes from the ability of the muscle to have a strong contraction through the CNS system. It seems that some steroids accelerate the motor unit recruitment at an acceleratted rate.... I'm not sure on that though, someone else could probably explain better....

Yeah I understand size does not = strength, or not necessarily anyway. I guess I was just curios how the effect can be so instant just through hormone manipulation, and how hormones directly and instantly allow that increase. You gave a good answer, thank you.
