How difficult is it to care for land?

pdaddyII

Fiancé grew up on a 60 acre farm in Southern Ohio. She hasn't fallen in love with any of the houses we've seen simply because they haven't had enough land/seclusion for her. I finally caved and viewed a house on over 7 acres with a super long private drive and 30ft deep fully stocked pond. There just seems to be so much maintenance involved with having so much land to take care of ie cutting grass, pond maintenance, driveway resurfacing etc....

Lovely. It is work, but you can have someone else do it too or help when you're busy. Taking care of some of it yourself is a satisfying way to spend time if you enjoy that stuff. 7 acres is not too bad at all.

Sometimes I think I could do that, but I get this lonely feeling I can't shake since I wasn't raised that way. I get why she would want that since she is comfortable with it. Is this a rural area?

Taking care of a yard sucks ass. It takes a full Saturday to mow the lawn, trim the palms and clean up the weeds. I could just imagine how awful it would be to work on that many acres.

A large part of the land is the front/driveway portion. I would strongly consider just letting that grow out naturally so I wouldn't need to mow it. Or maybe just throwing down a shit ton of wildflower seeds. I don't think it would be too terrible with a riding mower.

Not worth the work: even with a riding lawnmower, you're going to spend a full half of either your Saturday or Sunday cutting and then doing the trim. I have a one acre lot in a subdivision just outside of town, and even with this I question why on earth I wanted a big corner lot so badly.

A riding mower and a case of beer would probably be cool. We don't have land like that in CA, but man, do I hate yard work. I used to enjoy a Saturday in the yard, drinking some beers, then a dip in the pool. Now I just don't have the time for it.

I wish we had some of your messicans, I'd just hire a couple dozen for yard work. I could even house them in cabins on the property. Maybe I could plant some crops too and they could help with that. I wouldn't need to pay them, food and shelter is payment enough.

7 acres should be easy to take care of... If you're not a lazy ass you should do just fine.

If I could take care of the mowing needed for a quarter section at the age of 10, I'm sure you'll manage just fine with less than 10 acres.

The land looks gorgeous bro! However I have a close friend who has acerage like that and that is all he does. As soon as you get the whole place cut and trimmed its time to start over. If financially you can handle hiring someone to knock out the big stuff then go for it. If not I would think long and hard before making that kind of commitment. I only have an acre and have a yard man who handles that shit!

That's what mexicans are for!
You can ball for acreage like that but not for landscaping service/maintenance?

There's no issue with affording to hire someone to do it but I would like to do at least some of it. We would need to focus on some interior renovations as well.

if you work 50 plus hours a week, the work will get old after 3 months. Especially when you have kids, I hate getting home after a long week and instead of taking care of kids and going to the park i have to fucking mow the lawn

That place looks glorious

The place has been on the market for over a year. I have a feeling the owners are going to be whores to negotiate with. They originally had the property priced 100K more than it is now. Could be both a good thing or a bad thing.

My dad has a large yard. Takes him a half day to cut it with a riding mower. I've been thinking about buying him a $13,000 industrial mower just to make it easy on him.

Damn, their that much huh? Hiring someone is looking more and more appealing. How much would you say he has to mow?

Yea, I hear ya on this. I'm only working about 20hrs a week now though so I would have the time.

bro i dunno you don't strike me as the getting hands dirty type
might soil your dolce-gabanna shades or chip a manicured nail
teehee

Noo, you pick them up from home depot in the morn, then drop them off in the evening.

WTF?!?! I did hard manual labor for ten years ie drywall, roofing, commercial mover, construction grunt. I hated every fucking minute of it though, yea you're fucking right imma hire me some help. It's in Sylvania, which is a much nicer city that borders Toledo. Can I hire you brah?

i'd be willing to trade the home depot messicans for the scuzzy white trash, the former contribute at least.
Both pay sales taxes on everything and no federal/ state income tax. Only difference is the skin color and native language.

And "white trash" won't work from 4am till 8pm for shit pay. Not in the American culture.

How many you see @ HD?

i have grudging respect for the illegal migrant, esp after getting to know a few up this way, work harder than most of us

IDK, driveway is about 100 yards up to the house, another 100 yards or so behind the house to the woods, and maybe 150 yards across.

it is a tricky situation, i used to be hard nosed gtfo deport sorta bro.
then i actually got to know a few, and it changed my perspective.
-expand the green card deal
-allow for easy extensions as long as employed
-make citizenship easier to come by for those green card holders
who have put the time in
while at the same time
clamp down on the border
cut off illegals from access to DLs, schools, and other public services
deport all who haven't made an attempt to get the now easier to come by green cards

Dont forget the criminals!
I like the GC Idea!
we cant ban the DL's though, how are they going to get to work in the sticks?
And we should let the schools be open to the GC holders and working folk that are "registered for work". Because they wont be here if they cant provide a future for their kids.

Border sec has tripled, we need something else too.

green card holders are not illegal and therefore entitled to dls and other public services...

I couldn't live in the city again, now that I'm used to farm life. I grew up a few blocks from UCLA in West Los Angeles, and the crowds, petty crime, rudeness, and just overall hustle & bustle is too much. I like not bothering to lock doors, and never losing car keys because they're in the ignition or on the dashboard. And I like not worrying about bothering neighbors if I want to blow an air raid siren at midnight, etc. Or just go out front and shoot guns, or any number of other things we can't do in a city.

We're on 20 acres, and being that it's mostly avocados tended by our workers, there's very little yard work for me to do. Just a normal-sized front lawn, and a few planter boxes in the back yard around the pool. The driveway is not landscaped; just has natural weeds & brush. We just have to knock down a 10 foot clearance of growth on either side of the driveway for fire dept regulations. It's about 1.5 miles long from the highway to the house, and then it continues up to two other houses a couple miles north of ours.

It's all about acreage, the more open land the harder to maintain, wooded land takes little to no maintenance. We have 1200 acres right off appalation trail, and its a mofo to maintain.

depends of how much of the space has grass, if it's like a wooded area that you wont use much you can get away with less maintenance, but based on the driveway and pond pics the trees are a bit spaced out so you will need to mow the whole thing, I have just 3/4 of an acre and ever since hubby's surgery that had him away from the yard it's been a bitch to maintain, pine needles and trees like oak that shed like crazy can get really time consuming.

If you can afford to hire someone it's different, I'd do it in a heartbeat, maybe you can tend to the close areas and have someone else for the rest.

This is what I am definitely leaning towards.

property like that isnt easy to find anymore id jump on it, the grass etc will be easy with a good size zero turn mower, the pond will be the bitch.
