how can walking burn fat?

i'm talking about just regular walking...like just down the road. i know all these women who lose fat just by casually walking down the road talking to each other for a couple miles. if they're walking at a pretty normal pace, then how does their heart rate get high enough to burn calories?? just wondering cause i can't stand running.
 
Yes think about it. You drive everywhere. You walk around your house and your work. By walking for an extended period of time, yes it does get your heart rate up, and it will burn fat over time. I walked 2 rough miles yesterday and even though it was unplanned, it was a pretty good cardio session, believe it or not.
 
Hey smr91481. Causal walking will burn about 5 cal/min. So if the ladies walked for 30 min they would burn about 150 cals. If you increase the intensity of your walking you'll burn a bit more. I have a bad knee from an old hockey injury, so I walk for my cardio and it works fine. Remember it's about the time not the distance (min 20 minutes).
