How can i speed up my computer?

- Disable the useless programs that open right when you start Windows (or any programs you wont immediately use)
- Empty your "Temporary Internet Files" folder
- Empty your "Temp" folder
- Empty your "Cookies" folder
- Go to download.com and find a cleaning utility that finds outdated/bad files like uninstall files to programs you've already deleted, etc.
- After you've done all of the above, restart it, then use the disk Defragment utility (you'll have to let your comp sit while it defrags)

And
- Restart your computer at least once every day or two

If you have $$$
- Invest in more RAM

What operating system are you running (Windows, Mac)? How fast? Is your hard drive nearly full?

Deleted all that stuff... Trying to find a cleaning utility now.

It's win98, 500MHZ P3, 192mb RAM. Not much HD space left.

start/run and type msconfig

go to the start up and see how many items are checked. If it's more than ten then start unchecking what you don't need to start up. Having too many things start up automatically if often a major cause of slow down. Also it would hurt to run ad-aware to see if you have any spyware running.

Lastly get Windows XP. You can download XP professional (and don't don't have to activate professional) off kazaalite or winmx or you can even to the stand up thing and buy it. You will notice at least a 100% improvement in performance going from 98 to XP.

Scream at it and tell the motherfucker that you're going to smash it into pieces if it doesn't cooperate with you. It seems to work for me.

Free up some disk space - it's possible that you don't have enough space for the swap file...
Use a static size swap file - set it's size to maybe 300mb and move it to the begininng of the HD for faster access..
You can do that by using Norton SpeedDisk...
Also shut down all the unnecessary processes running in the background as suggested...

Your likely problem....

I find when any system starts passing 75% of it's HD capacity, it really slows down. I suppose because there's a lack of space for HD writes and it has to find an open block of memory to use rather than just dump in the closest spot at the time.

Upgrade to a bigger HD or second HD. Put your applications on the second hard drive, leave system on primary. The HD with the operating system often needs to stay free.

Defrag, optimizing the registry, debugging the HD often solves most problems (Norton Utilities). Getting more memory won't hurt, but there's a limit of how much faster it makes the system.

get xp

dude download fix-it utilities, and let that program do it for you. It's free off kazaa:D When you get it,just run "all in one" while you sleep(because it takes a few hours)End of problem.
