ARE THEY ASKING YOU QUESTIONS THAT THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND? AND HOW ARE YOU EXPLAINING IT TO THEM?

World events never seemed very real to me as a kid. I knew they were real, of course, but things just seemed so distant that I didn't think about them most of the time, I suppose.

I BET SOME KIDS ARE TERRIFIED AS THEY WATCH THE NEWS.

Precisely why the news is NEVER on in my house... and I mean NEVER, but especially not now. Also I had a discussion with their dad and he is in agreement that there is no need to have the TV on unless we heavily supervise.

It is bad enough that there are children who are living this war. I don't need my children bombarded by constant images of it.

NO RADIO EITHER.

I can honestly say that unless my kids saw at someone else's house (which I don't believe they did) my children have never seen any images of TWC tragedy either.

Some parents should be shot because of how irresponsibly they allow this type of graphic information to permeate and saturate their children's lives. If they have such a bloodthirst perhaps they should just move to Bosnia, Iraq, Israel, Somalia or wherever hell is present on earth now....

while I do agree mainly Bmom I feel some exposure or atleast a understanding is necessary,my girlfriend is someone who was sheltered from the real world and will be in big shit once she gets out on her own because she doesnt know jack about real life. Real young kids never need to see violence but about 10 would be a good idea to atleast educate them on it

YAY for Bikinimom! Shes not one of those parents that says "well, I dont want my kids seeing that, so they should just ban it from TV!" Its great to see some parents take an active part in thier kids lives. You get good karma for that!

On the other hand, what do you say to OAK, he does have a good point about needing some exposure, not to the violence but definately to the fact that it is happening.

I agree.......if you shelter them too much they are likely to suffer for it in later life.

I see what you are saying. You guys must realize though, that my children DO NOT live in a bubble. They know we are at war and they have asked me questions. I believe that knowledge is power and do not withhold INFORMATION from my children, but only keep them from PROPAGANDA. Let us discuss the difference between the two.

The US is at war: information.
People are dying: information.
Who is "right" and who is "wrong" = PROPAGANDA.

What is it that my children are going to see on TV or hear on the radio that is information and NOT propaganda?

Do they really need to hear air raid sirens? Do they really need to see the explosions of the bombs? Do they really need to see the images of all the casualties and injureds? Do they really need to see the rubble?

You all can see that I can be quite graphic in my written style. Do any of you think that I am any less "real" when I speak of the horror of war to my children? NO. I tell them the naked, ugly truth about EVERYTHING that is horrible about the world. Everything from drugs, to violence, to stupidity, to hate: these topics are discussed intelligently along with ANY other topic. There is a difference between arming your children with information and surrounding your children with images and propaganda that will cause them to feel unnecessary angst.

I was born in the very late 60's. Both my parents lived through WWII and the Hungarian revolution. I never saw either of these two wars on TV or heard about it on the radio. Did I grow up with some romantic notion about war? ABSOLUTELY NOT! My parents made damned sure I understood how horrifying these experiences were.
