High Intensity Interval Training

What has been your experience with this?

I am going to add this type of training to the last 5 minutes of cardio i do, slowly building up over the course of weeks to being the last 15 minutes or so. However, the idea that i should only do HIIT 2-3x a week keeps coming up as i research it. What is the science behind only doing it 2-3 times a week? Is it because it is anaerobic?

the last 8 minutes or so of todays cardio was HIIT. 30 secs on, 30 secs off for 4 sets. then i did 30 secs on 45 off for 2 sets. then another 30 secs.

Wasn't bad, and i liked it. Only bad part is my heart rate is faster than normal when i exercise. they say you're supposed to get to 90-95% of max heart rate which is 176-186 for me. However my normal moderate intensity heart rate is about 175. HIIT puts me up at about 200 or so. I doubt its doing damage though as i've read of people with tachycardia who went to 220+ for hours at a time and had no ill effects. besides, its just for 30 seconds at a time.
