high fructose corn syrup....

OK, I know that straight fructose is either stored in the liver or stored as fat. But does high fructose corn syrup replenish muscle stores? If not, then why does Gatorade use it?
Thanks.

Well, I am thinking chemically it may be different and does convert to glycogen to be stored in muscle?

I think its more a reason of convenience, call me a cynic...

the reason I believe that is tht High fructose corn syrup is used in ALL sorts of candies and bars since it is a cheap way of making the bars and cadies "stay together"... it is used as glue for all the dry elements.

As to why it would be used in a sports-drink? maybe to up the total carb-count (high carb numbers sell).

I could be wrong though, let hear it for the other people

Fructose is not immedialely recognised by the body as an energy source, it metabolizes into fat. HFCS shuts off your bodies natural appetite control, so you tend to eat far beyond what you should. ( Not only is it cheaper to use, but you consume more of it too $$$$$ ) The fructose you get from fruit won't hurt you, but HFCS is usually in high concentrations.

Also, trans fats increase bad cholesterol, and decrease the good. It also increases blood levels of lipoprotein, which put you at higher risk of heart disease.

I just got that from the Abs Diet book my wife bought me.

gatorade uses it for ENDURANCE, so liver replenishment is optimal

HFCS is still Fructose syrup so from everything i have researched, high or not it sill still prefer filling liver

Fruit is metabolized into fat, but not stored, correct?
Wrong

As for HFCS, it will partially replenish glycogen stores and be converted to fat

In the end it depends on how much HFCS you take

Hey, haven't been here in awhile but I do recognize Anthrax. How's it going mang! This is correct, as well as macro's statement.

Also, the liver can on average (depending on each individual) store up to anywhere between 50-100grams before excess gets coverted into triglycerides. Lyle McDonald did a great paper on this a few years back. It IS here in the archive if anybody wants to do a search for it. I think Par Deus posted it up if I remember correctly...not sure though. Just use Lyle as a cross-reference.

Energy and strength levels are optimal when liver glycogen is full and not empty, which may be the reason why Gatorade adds it in their drinks. I still wish they'd cut back a little on the fructose and HFCS and increase the dextrose. Also, fructose is a better flavoring agent than that of other sugars, so i'm sure this adds into the equation as well...at least a little.

BTW, HFCS is composed of either 42% or 55% fructose, with the remaining sugars being glucose and higher saccharides

So HFCS <> fructose

High Fructose Corn Syrup is garbage. Stay away from it. I read Dr. Scott Connelly's book about how High Fructose Corn Syrup is a big fat sugar pill. Yet Metrx still uses it in all of their Protein bars. It is cheaper to make and is pure trash for bodybuilding. If you see a company using High Fructose Corn Syrup it tells you that the company is only about money.
