Hernia questions

My doctor very recently diagnosed me with a hernia (behind my testicles :eek2: )
I was so happy to learn it wasnt a varicocele or some testicular problem that I high tailed it out of there without getting in depth with him  (I'm not real happy to be at the DR's office in the first place :()

He did say the only treatment was surgically (which I had figured anyway), but this thing has become troublesome with minor movements and such...Not so painful that I cant function, but definitely something I notice when doing certain activites...(and I havent trained upper legs in 2 weeks now becasue it is bothersome)

Anyone else had one here that can give me any insight into its potential progression, treatments, surgery, etc...
Any info from anyone who has had one is appreciated :)

If it was me I'd get it taken care sooner rather then later. More peace of mind and you will recover and get back to 100%

Find a GOOD surgeon though, don't let anyone say that putting in some mesh to strengthen the area is a good idea, it was popular, but it caused long term problems and has been discontinued by many.

Really? Most of the info I have been finding says mesh inserts are the way to go....

damn bor i hope its nothing serious

I am still able to train with most movements...But power movements are OUT :(

I get discomfort with simple things like blowing my nose, and bending over in my seat:(...So it IS a problem that will have to be addressed at some point...

Term I had umbilical hernia surgery done in March of this year.

I was told not to train for 3 months at all then start slowly.

My symptoms were very similar to Yours except I also experienced a slight "pull" inside the abdominal area between my belly and testicles.
Due to the large mass of ab muscle the surgeons could not clearly locate the hernia, luckily the surgery went ok. They did not want to put me under full anaesthesia because of my bw(330lbs), instead only anestesied(sp?) the stomach area and put some shit in my veins to make me sleepy. Still took about 30min and wasn´t very comfortable(slight pain).

I am now in my 5th week of training and progressing slowly.

I suspect the hernia occured(or started?) during sets of heavy squats and good mornings (600+) without belt.

I hope everything works out good for You. You will be ok in no time.

I had umbilical hernia surgery 3 times. The doc finally installed the mesh on the 3rd one. That was in 1989. Haven't had aproblem since. I took off 4 weeks from the gym. Then he released me.

I feel for you bro! I had a serious hernia but it was above the testicles. I definately suggest getting it taken care of ASAP! I let mine go for 7 years before getting it taken care of (YES, VERY STUPID) and it continued to grow until it got to be the size of a grapefruit. At that point they had no choice but to use mesh to reinforce the area. I have not heard of any negative sides to the mesh however. I have had no problems and my surgery was over 9 years ago. No problems with lifting either, even with VERY heavy front squats!!
Good luck bro!:Pope:

I get the same "pulling" feeling during many things...That is when the discomfort really hits me...

But I can lug 100 lb dumbbells from the rack across to the benches still with no problem, but when I bend over in my chair to pick up something off the fllor THAT hurts

Can anyone give me a ballpark figure on what this might cost? (for the uninsured :()
I was insured and my portion was around $1500 or so. That was also 9 years ago.
Also, it is just a day surgery so you're in & out quick. But it's the recovery that's a killer. They tell you to avoid coughing, sneezing, and laughing and of course the very next day after the surgery I cought a cold. :die: It feels like you're going to come undone all over again.

I'm sorry to hear about your misfortune.

How does a hernia exactly feel like? I once thought I had one because during the end of my squat routine I had pulled something so serious that I could not walk for a week. I'm the type of person who would have to be beaten and dragged before I would step into a doctors office.

After two weeks I was lifting like nothing ever happened, but if I try and move my testes from left to right there is some slight discomfort. I'm hoping that this is some sore tendon that is still healing.

I went into the doc for an STD exam...He discovered the hernia during a physical when I was describing the uncomfortable symptoms to him (I figured I had the STD, so I thought that was causing the discomfort).
It turns out I had both problems :(
One has been taken care of now but it turns out the hernia is what is causing me more discomfort...

It feels like someone is pulling my lower abdomen down into my groin at times on one side...

But I am able to train eveything except upper legs NO PROBLEM...It is NOT in the gym that it is real bothersome...Its when I am sitting at my desk and bend over, or blow my nose, cough, etc...) In the gym I seem to be fine  (so far)

Damn bro, I'm sorry to hear that. Do you remember what you where doing when it happened, or did you just wake up with the pain one day?

I thought I had strained my hamstring deadlifting about 3 weeks ago...I was at the doctor about 3 days after that and he told me I had it then :(

My guess is that it was mild until I had that "pull" 3 weeks ago (I have had localized dull pain for months now), but that one incident seems to have exacerbated to a new level of discomfort :( (which is getting progressively worse  )

Terminator I am pretty sure I have had for a couple of months(4 maybe) before the surgery. I was able to squat, bench, deadlift albeit it didn´t feel very comfortable. I was even going up in weights. Not the smartest thing I know.

The thing is I KNEW something was wrong/injured, but all the exams and visit to doctors showed nothing. I then decided to go to Prague to see the doctor who performed the last surgery I had(on small intestine). Even she couldn´t tell 100% if there was hernia or not but I just insisted they do it . Right after the surgery she came to me and said I was right( shouldn´t the doctors be right not the patient?) and the hernia was the size of a small orange. Damn.
I stayed in the hospital for 4 days. About the mesh - I heard about it before and thought it would be better for me(lifting in the future) but she said her experience with them was not good-possible compications like infections etc. Of course it is just her opinion, but she has been cutting people in half for 40 years so I listened.

I know how it feels when You have to go to a surgery and stop working out and everything but believe me it won´t be so bad and You will recover quickly. IMHO it is better to have it done and not wait.

Take care and speedy recovery!
