When you see people doing things REALLY wrong and it might cause injury, do you ever step up and tell them the right way? I have a few times, I'm just wondering what everyone else does.

No, not really. Your assumtion of what is wrong my be the reason they are doing it. For example if you saw someone doing a proper Clean and Jerk and you were not trained in Olymic lifts you would think they are doing somthing to hurt themselfs.

And I dont think people at the gym will lisen to a 18 year old with neg. 780 Karma ahhahahahah

If it were to cause injury to me, absolutely. :) I.E. a friend of mine had a random gym goer carry a 45 lb plate over her face ... NOT RIGHT.

I guess I put myself in his/her situation. Do I want to be bothered when someone thinks I am doing something wrong? No, not really. So unless I can really figure out if it's ignorance or simply plain stupidity, I just leave the situation alone.

Oh, & I've never seen anyone at either of my gyms perform a Clean & Jerk or similar ... b/c they're too worried about Benching, Squats & Biceps :) To each his own... I let them be unless I KNOW they need a tip (i.e. by asking for my opinion).

here's what I have learned over the years. most people will get offened if you try to tell them that they are doing something wrong, and try to help them. there is almost no point in going out of your way to help them out.
Although, there are some that would genuinely like any advice that you give them. you can usually tell by body language. if the person looks like they have a chip on their shoulder, dont even bother with trying to help them out

Yeah I agree. I don't help unless asked. A lot of people don't like to be talked to when in the gym, for whatever reason. People gotta respect that.

I am w/Booey on this one. I don't help anyone unless they specifically come ask me. You never know what they are training for. Best to just keep to yourself.

I agree, but we were all there at one point. I mean when I see the same guy doing the same thing day in and day out, I help them. If you approach them in a "helpful" way, instead of a "your doing it plain wrong" way then Its good. Just say "actuly if you do it just like this its better for this and that". In my experience people have benifited, and if they got angry, I would tell them they are retarted, im only trying to help. Oh, and a pretty big 18 year old at that :)

When I managed my own gym and I was on the floor ... yes. Especially if they were going to get hurt.

When I was traveling and in a new gym for just a few wo's ... no. Mind your own business.

If you are going to correct someone's form, then you better have the goods to back up your point. Even then, it is better to be asked than to butt in.

Agreed and I love your avatar.
But I go to college and MOST of the people here are collegers, and I see them all the time, so it's different than just going to some random gym.

I usually keep my mouth shut because I don't want to be 'that guy' who acts like the 'Wizard of Oz' of fitness. Plus I don't think I look good enough to be throwing tips around. If I was huge I think my results themselves might give me credibility to give a few hints though.

However, last week I saw a guy next to me doing stiff leg dead lifts. His form looked perfectly fine. Just then, one of his loud-mouth buddies working out across the gym floor said: "Yo dawg, you gonna blow yo back out doing deads like that!" The expert went on to demonstrate how to do a regular deadlift. The first guy tried explaining that he's always done them stiff legged and the expert responded: "Dawg, I'm going to school to be a personal trainer and I play football, trust me." Apparently he has no idea that the stiff leg deadlift even exists.

The poor guy did a few sets of deadlifts the expert's way then went upstairs to do something else. I ran into him upstairs and just said: "By the way, your form was fine downstairs."

That's as far as I'll go with going out of my way to comment on somebody's training at this point.

i wouldn't normally
but i might say "have you ever tried that movement like this? it's how my trainer taught me"
if not you should always ask if they need help or a spotter
otherwise they might think you are hitting on em
or you're some wise ass
or they might just ignore you and go harder and do hurt themselves worse than if they would have without your intervention

Yes, I would...... if it is some hot chicks doing squats ... so that I can grab her boobs while pretending to spot her ;)

Actually I no longer do it.
People usually think they have the ultimate workout and perform movements with a perfect form
Unless you're 220 lbs, ripped and lifting more than a huge powerlifter they won't listen to you and may think you're an arrogant bastard

I saw an elderly lady, at least 60, reading from a folded up piece of paper and then doing SLDL's that looked pretty bad. I didn't say anything, I thought she might rip my head off.

perhaps she was a cougar hoping a young stud like you might assist her lol

I normally just shake my head and laugh. :) Otherwise I will not say anything. I will though sometimes do the exact same exercise correctly right next to them with more weight, that usually gets their attention. Remember actions speak louder than words.

There is a saying that I heard once and it plays true here:

Good judgement comes from experience, experience comes from bad judgement.

So let them lift wrong and they will gain some experience at least. :)

i don't say shit, cause most guys think the way they do it is RIGHT, and will probably talk shit after you walk away...

i only offer advice to guys i really know...

That is a very good approach I have done that a few times.

Its one thing to point out some thing to some one and its another to walk around like you work there or are a trainer that works there instructing everyone what to do. There a couple people at the gym that go around and tells everyone what to do, talk about arogant. I just tell them to go get lost. So once might be ok but don't make a habit out of it.

Why do you feel the need to point out how you have done everything, everyone else responds with. "yep that worked for me" "nope I show em how to do it" "well I ignore em if you guys do".

if someone doesn't ask I don't say shit. I had a guy tell me my form was wrong when doing deadlifts, he tried to show me how to do it "correctly" and couldn't get the weights off the ground. What an ass.
