Help with weight training!!!

I plan to start working out doing weight training. But I know nothing about weight training and coming up with a routine for myself. I want to speed up my metabolism and Ive heard weight training does well to do so. So I was wondering if someone can help me start out a first routine and give me advice and what not to get started. Again I know nothing about weight training so any help would be greatly appreciated!!! ~thanks~

When it comes to weight training, seeing things being done and having them explained to you (either in person or via good pictures), rather than reading how to do them them, is most helpful. Do you have any friends who are into training who can show you the correct way to do some exercises in person? (Or hiring a trainer at least for a few sessions to make sure you are doing things right...but that can be pricey.) If not, there are plenty of fitness magazines (especially ones geared toward women) that have some workouts with great photos. Oxygen is probably the best, it's my Bible! They usually have great, fairly in-depth workouts for at least 1 or two muscle groups in each issue. (The latest one has workouts for abs, arms, back and glutes.) Maybe pick up the latest issue at a store and go to your local library and see if they have a few months worth of that and other mags that you can look through.

If you want to up your metabolism, weight training will certainly help because muscle burns more calories than fat...however, you also need to make sure your diet is good too. Eating small, frequent, nutritious meals (5-6/day) and drinking plenty of water are also going to help your metabolism because they keep it steadier than the typical 3 (or less) meals. There are plenty of threads with good diet advice...and the girls here are great and really know their shit! :)

Yeah well im in college so hiring a training is out. I just dont have the money for that. But thanks for the info and ill pick up that latest magazine!! ~thanks~

Well when you go to the gym they usually give you a free1 hour session. You should take advantage of that and learn how to lift properly.

M gym gives you a free one hour session and follow ups are 35 an hour. I don't think that is to much to just set up something to help you meet your goals

At my university's facility, there are a few people on hand to help if you have any questions. Does yours? If not, make friends with someone from one of the varsity teams. They generally have been shown proper lifting from a strength & conditioning coach, so they would be a good resource to tap into also. The magazine's are a useful tool but be careful not to get discouraged if you don't look like one of the models after a few sessions. Good Luck!

i go the workout facilities on campus. i pay for it already in my tuition and fees.

If you feel uncomfortable asking peers how to lift, ask a trainer or a coach...basketball, football, any coach that you may know...maybe they can tell you who to ask to learn about proper form and techniques.

Ask guys at the gym. Most of the time they are happy to help if you genuinely need it. Also check out these web sits for visuals and more...

If you go this route, scope out the scene and find someone who appears to have a good idea of what they are doing. I can't tell you how many guys (and ladies) I see who are lifting/lowering too fast, have improper form, not breathing, or do other very odd things. Oh the "people in the gym" stories I can tell...I'm sure everyone in here has a ton.

Ahhh, if it were not for my husband and his knowledge of weight training and form, I would look like an idiot. Sooooo true, find someone who really knows what they are doing. It's amazing that once you learn proper form and speed (for lack of better description), how many people in the gym just are not getting what they really should be getting out of their workouts.. using proper weight is important too. Good luck! Sometimes just asking around, friends, realtives, etc. you find someone. I agree with mbrooke5, seek out a coach, they would DEFINATELY know someone, if they can't themselves assit you personally. GOOD LUCK!
