HELP! Serious dog question.

I picked up my new puppy 2day after work. I also have an 8 month old puppy. He keeps pouncing on the other one. I don't think he's trying to hurt him.It seems like he's just playing rough. I figured this would happen. Isn't it normal? He will stop, right? Help. Anyone else experience this?

It's normal but shouldn't be encouraged. You could separate them for a little until the puppy can hold it's own. They can be together but only when you're around. It's normal to play rough, just let the older dog know it's wrong.

The older dog may even look like it's biting the puppy but it usually isn't. It's just nibbling really. Sometimes, the puppy will accidentally get scared and yelp but it'll be okay.

We have had three dogs and twice we've had a puppy and an older dog. Both males.

No dog expert, but I think this early feeling out period is important to establish hierarchy early on. Breaking up my older dog from "playing rough" when I got my new puppy, disturbed the natural order of dominance in dogs and I think this led to alot of more serious fights as the puppy got older. Let em sort it out, supervised of course.

And dont let them on ceramic tile floors, vinyl, or any other slick surfaces...

Causes leg abnormalities and hip problems.

its normal but something you need to keep an eye on, don't let the puppy get his ass kicked, stop the playing when it gets too rough and give the older one a stern "no."

The 8 month old is establishing dominance, which is part of their instincts, you can control it just like you can train a dog not to bite people, but the 8 month old must see you as the dominant pack leader, if you haven't already established that with it yet you need to see a trainer ASAP. What breed are these puppies?

THANX,Lestat! I have boxers.

Ah yes, you must establish dominance with boxers without a doubt. They are a powerful breed with just enough size to really be dangerous if not properly trained. There are so many poorly trained smaller breeds because people are lazy, get the small dogs because they think they are less work, and fail to properly train. The end result is just a more annoying dog than anything because they are so small they rarely do any damage. A boxer is a little less harder to ignore when it wants its way.

He'd stop if he were my dog. Your dog doesn't fear you.

Now I know why you stalk me. It's always the freaks.

My dog(outlaw) is usually super good. He's also really smart. He can do a TON of cool tricks. He doesn't bark or chew up stuff. He learned FAST not to do that bullshit..... but he keeps trapping and pawing at Beau(the puppy).
Today is his first day with him.I hope he gets better. I'm watching them closely.

It should get better but limit their contact or separate them by a fence that is see through, they will still socialize. Start off with just a few minutes at a time, then increase their time together as they both start to adjust gradually.

If I were the puppy, I'd decapitate the other mother fucker when I grew up. I'm a lone dog. Don't need someone up my ass each and every day.

for the record, it sounds like lestat has never had a dog... i could be wrong, but shitty advice (IMO) warrants that response.

if the puppy gets hurt, he will yelp... that yelp is a sign to the older pup to stop, and he will if he's playing.

you can tell if he's playing by body language. ass up, nose down = play

i have 2 dobermans and you would never know they were playing if you heard them. it sounds like a nasty dog fight and would freak a lot of people out, including me when i first got the second pup...

by the way, when i did get the 2nd he was 6 weeks old and around 10lbs... my female was 92 lbs and knocked the shit out of him... but if he ever yelped she backed off.

plus, your older male, through play is saying... i'm the alfa...

and biteme, you really are an idiot.

Any stray dogs venture into my yard, it's dinner time. Tastes just like chicken.

Thanx for the response. They were actually doing better before bedtime. The first time I have EVER heard the puppy yelp was this morning at feeding time. I KNEW NOT to feed them together. I have been feeding them in seperate rooms. My puppy is really little and outlaw likes to eat...so I knew he would get bitchy. I was going to put food in their bowls(with the bowls on the kitchen counter)then give them the food in seperate rooms. Let me tell ya how that worked out for me:
I opened the cabinet(where the food is located) and outlaw ran over to the puppy and maybe bit him. I'm not sure.It all happened SUPER fast. I just heard a horrible noise and the puppy yelp. He hept yelping until I picked him up. He isn't bleeding or anything.... but he was acting hurt.I was pissed. Well, actually, I started crying like a little girl...BUT I had not had my coffee so I think I deserve a pass.lol.
I now know not to do anything with the food until the dogs are seperated.I knew outlaw would kick the pup's butt over food.I now know outlaw will kick the pup's butt over the idea of food.
Besides that, it has all been ass up/nose down playing. I appreciate the help.

You need to teach the older dog that fighting over food isn't acceptable. Will he let you put your hand in his dish while he is eating? If not, that's a problem. Be strict with the older dog.

He lets me grab his dish.Actually, he usually sits until I tell him he can go to his bowl.

Tell Outlaw to sit while you and the puppy go get the food, then put the food down and tell him he can eat. That way, he'll know you're boss and the puppy won't get hurt.

I'll give it a try..... let u know how it works out. :)

ive trained dogs for 20 years, from the large breeds to small breeds, all classes as well. my forte is training pups and households with multiple animals. some of my clients are well known people.

having said that, from the limited information youve given me, my conclusion is that the bigger dog will kill your new pup. they follow a strict patriarch system, especially at young ages. that dog is going to rip the pup to pieces, like shredded cheese.

good luck!

I will be SURE to let u know.

Myway,

Your boys look like boxers yes?

My boy is a spoiled little brat but a sweetheart. He is very dominant about food, bones etc. Unless I am around then he sits about an inch away and whines. The other dog has learned his part. Don't worry about them but do not let them get too rough. The dogs are going to establish who is in charge on their own and you cannot stop it.

They have been better for the past several hours. It almost looks like they are playing.Outlaw keeps doing the bite thing but I noticed he's just mouthing him.... not biting down. And Beau(the lil' guy) had been chewing on Outlaw's ears. I will just watch closely and seperate when feeding.

my mom has 2 boxers... both getting up in years, 8 and 11 or 12 now... they used to fight over food... they'd go at it until that smell of angry dog was in the air... rough.
