HELP - selling a bike to an overseas buyer

Hope someone on here has some experience with this. A friend of mine has a custom bike that he needs to get rid of. He has advertised it on several web sites. A couple of different buyers from the UK have contacted him and one said that they were sending the funds but he really didn't take it seriously. Today he was contacted by Airborne Express saying that they had a delivery for him (this is the only thing it could be) and he has been contacted by a shipping company about scheduling the pickup. How does he verify that the funds before he shipped the bike. It is $20,000 so he is more than a little uncomfortable with this.

Call the bank against which the check is drafted for verification. Have the money placed in a escrow account by the bank.
Once the buyer receives the bike then the funds are released from escrow to the seller.

Yeah, the guys build them and sell them as a hobby...after they ride them a bit of course. The one that is in the works right now is a kraftec softail frame, S&S 113 in motor, West Coast fenders that have been modified.
One day our UPS man came to the door and he was white as a sheet. Somehow he managed to knock it off the lift, it rolled off backward and was caught by the toolbox that was sitting behind it so there wasn't any damage that couldn't be fixed.

No website - like I said it is just a hobby right now. I've got some pics of it before it was painted and without the fenders but I'm not plat so I can't post it.
