Help on protein...

Learning a lot on the board and appreciative of the insight...

A few questions regarding protein...

Okay...what are some good/cheap/easy sources of proteins? I hit the tuna pretty regular and the protein shakes.

How do you eat/get all the protein?

#2 Also...what types of protein work the best for puttin on the meat? I use the whey shakes...normally 40 grams in the morning and another shake of 40+ immediately after workout.

I've heard that some people use different kinds before and after their workouts.

#3 Are you all eating like 6 meals a day or what? How do you space it out over the day?

#4 Are the amino acid supplements pretty important? I don't want to get too carried away with supplementation but am open to suggestions.

Thanks a lot

Milk.

Yes, space it out...eat every 2-3 hours. This keeps your metabolism elevated. I'm not sure this is all too important from a PL perspective however.

From what I can gather, nope. Proteins ARE amino acids. Eggs for example have all the amino acids you need.

Eggs are one of my favorites. They're cheap and easy. Kinda like this girl I used to date. I go through a couple dozen a week. Eggs that is, not chicks. The main part of my diet is lean beef and chicken. Lots of it!!!! I eat one time a day. All day long! Actually I eat a small meal every two to three hours with snacks in between. If I go any longer than that, I'm a bear. Just ask my wife. Tuna is good, too. Sometimes I'll have a shake after my workout if I'm not going straight home to eat. Whey protein is supposed to be the best as far as powders are concerned. But you can never beat good home cooked food. Supplement wise, I take creatine, vit c, alfalfa tabs and sometimes a multi vit.

supplemental wise I take multi vitamins, vita C, glucosamine chondrointin(for joints), and AMINO complex(I don't know if it actually helps in anything but I've seen when I take them I eat more so i take them). About the protein I rarely even pay attention to how much I get in me. I try to get in some protein before I go to sleep thought b/c I believe in you grow while you sleep so I wanna grow some more. I'll eat whenever i'm hungry throughout the day like jimmydean said "all day long". I would advise you if your used to eating a certain way do it, but if not then worry more about your training and train right then eat whatever you want at all times through the day just never get to the point where you have to say i'm hungry b/c that should never happen. MY fav's are honestly the cubanito shake at night, hamburgers(best protein in my eyes), and milk with everything; cookies, oatmeal creme pies, twinkies, whatever.

good advice everyone jimmie dean being my work partner and work out partner i can tell you he eats all day---when hes not eating hes shitting---he should just eat on the toilet----a small meal to him is 2 huge chicken breasts and mashed potatoes-----some thing ive been doing that jimmie dean showed me is adding oats to my protein shakes you do some chewing and it makes you think its a meal and fills you up---if your very lean and a hard gainer add peanut butter and ice cream to shakes with whole milk --if you tend to be heavy use low carb whey with skim milk--and dont forget eggs they are some of natures best food . dont waste money on amminos if you eat proper you dont need them

Well...considering that I am sitting here with a large jug of milk and three pizzas...umm..I'll give my input.

5lb bucket of prot = $40.
30lb of hamburger = $40
You decide which is the better deal.

Milk, eggs, tuna (lots), hamburger, steak, tons of carbs!!!

Don't spend your hard earned money on supplements if you can not afford to eat the food. I do believe that supplements can definately help...but only if you can eat the food to go along with it.

good advise b fold and I'll think i'm gonna incorporate on the 30lbs of beef next time I go and buy my whey protein i never looked at it like that and of course I prefer 5 burgers over a shake. Or wait even better instead of two tubs i'll buy one and drink a shake with 5 burgers. I'm gettin hungry lets see what the ol fridge has to offer.

I really like eggs too, but they contain something like 70% of your daily cholesterol. I talked to someone and they said it is "good" cholesterol. Can any one elaborate on this?

Yes there is good cholesterol and bad cholesterol. I read somewhere not sure where that good will help pump the heart. And bad will rise testosterone that's probably why before my high school PL meets I eat 8 McDonalds hamburgers and fries. You don't get much worse cholesterol than that. I never get good cholesterol at least I don't think I do.

I'm not sure about eggs having good or bad cholesterol but I've been going through several dozen eggs a week for about the last 7 years and just had my cholesterol profile checked. The good cholesterol is above normal and the bad is way below. My tryglicerides were normal and my heart attack ratio is 2.5. Borderline is 4.3. So I think eggs are pretty safe to consume in mass quantities. Never hurt the coneheads!!!

A good protien to take in before bedtime is " casien" it absorbs slower and thus leting your body grow throughout he night. Whey is great anytime and wspecially after workouts. I think the protienfactory can make you any type you want. there is a link on the trainign forum ( shit thats the first time i ever said that.)

Food is the best sorce of protien and should be your most prominent. EAT,EAT , EAT, is the best way to add mass and get strong. I agree with B fold that if youdon't eat real food the protien shakes are just going to be worthless. You need to consume more meals of substinance than you do of liquid.

What's casein protein. Is it some type of supplement or are there foods that have this. I've never heard of it, well I have but just don't know what the hell it is.

Well that's a lot of info. I eat pretty regular so that shouldn't be a prob.

I remember one guy talking about carbohydrates. I know they give you the energy but I also know that if you eat too much that that's when you start puttin on the belly.

My buddy and I hit it hard in the weightroom so if we eat the carbs that'll help us put on the meat?

Thanks all.

milk is about 80% calcium caseinate (casein). about 20% whey

the casein takes a long time to digest and not very anabolic for protein, but it gets the job done and is good for night

whey is broken down much quicker and is more anabolic, but it doesnt last as long (you have to eat protein pretty soon again)

I like a 6 egg white 3 yolk omelet with ham and cheese and hot sauce. I also like pizza and burgers and I eat mexican food at least every other day. I had the best soft taco's I have ever had in my life today. Two beef, two pork and two chicken, then before I went to the gym tonight, I had 4 more soft taco's (homemade this time).

Hamburger meet is great. You can do lots of stuff with it, and it is not all that expensive. Eating a half a dozen chicken breasts per day can get a little tough on the pocketbook.

I have to lose about 10 lbs before my next meet so I will have to clean up my eating a little bit, more eggs, less ice cream.

A little on the belly...a lot more on the bar.

Make sure to take somethng along with whey b/c whey can digest too quickly on its own. Flax oil is a great mixer with whey

Whey is great post workout. Since it is so utilized so quickly, this is the ideal time to use it. Along with a high GI carb like dextrose. Avoid fat or fiber at this time, as they delay gastric emptying.

A whey/caesin combination is great, and easy to prepare, by simply adding whey to milk. Chocolate syrup helps.

Lean cuts of beef are very good, such as tenderloin. Good source of protein, some minerals, naturally occuring source of creatine, high in l-carnitine, etc. Eat many cow, grow strong like bull.

The shakes I make consist of a little water...1.5-2 scoops of protein at 22 grams per scoop...then about a cup+ of milk. They do the trick for me.

I usually eat dinner not too long after that. Probably about an hour or so.

Now I've heard that you can only ingest/utilize 40 grams of protein per serving and if you intake more than that, you're wasting the meat. any truth to that?

About the eggs...

The only 'bad' cholesterol is in the yolk...so...if you are concerned about your cholesterol level...then eat a lot more whites and only put one or two yolks in there to give it some flavor!

Food

I think you should just stick to food. If you eat until your full and still can't gain weight, then add in protein shakes.

Eggs are the best protein. Meat/chicken is a close second. Then comes milk. Eggs do have cholesterol, but not as much as people used to think. And alot of the cholesterol is the good type, HDL.

I agree hamburger meat is good and easy and cheap. If only women were like that. I try to go through at least 1.5-2 pounds a day. I also eat chicken. I don't really worry about carbs, just get them from whatever I eat with the protein.

People vary as to how much protein they can utilize at one sitting. IF your really worried about it take ginger root, 500-1000 before you eat.
