HELP...my knee

I was doing bulgarian split squats with DB's. Basically it's a one-legged squat with your back leg elevated on a bench. I was on my left leg and my right leg was up on the bench. On the first or second rep I heard a loud pop over my headphones. So it was pretty loud. It was my right knee, though. The non-working one. When I do these, most of the stress is on the working leg, but some is on the non-working leg.

So, the back leg sort of curls up when I descend. It popped, I stopped. I squatted down and it hurted from about the bottom 2" to ATF. On my knee, it would be on the right side of the patella. When I extended the knee, everything felt "loose"

So I thought it was pretty bad and I squatted down again when I got back. No pain. Now I just did it again. If I squat down in hindu squat position and lean a little forward, it's the same pain on the right side of the knee. Only hurts when descending the very bottom ROM. If I leave my finger on that spot and stand up, it's parallel with the patella on the right side. So what do you think happened?

probably tendons plucking etc

being in a overreaching state, or not completely recovering CNS wise can also make that sort of thing a bigger problem

Tendons plucking? So what do I do? What'd a torn ACL, MCL, or patella like? (my worst nightmare)

The pain at the very bottom of the ROM means what?

Thanks for the help.

sorry don't know, ask a doctor

well if an ACL is torn, you wouldn't be able to absorb a landing etc, but you can still squat OK.

You probbaly have muscle imbalance and patella tracking issues

Hmm, well I've been doing a bunch of bodyweight full squats and it's weird. Sometimes it'll hurt and sometimes it won't. And when it hurts it's when my knees seem to be torquing a little, and only at the very, very bottom.

The crappy thing is that I was doing these to fix the tracking problem. I got runner's knee in the summer, and felt the same looseness, but no pain. I went to some crappy doctor who told me to do leg extensions instead of squats, and that there was nothing I could do about it. My joints are just loose according to him. The x-rays were fine. He even said my VMO was fine, but considering his other advice, I guess not. The left knee is fine.

When you squat all the way down and then come up, and if you put your hand over your knee, do you feel your patella moving from right to left and sort of like a rough& loose bundle? The patella is sort of right of center. It does seem like a tracking problem, then?

those are ligaments, if the rip you will be in big trouble. Could be the IT band outside of the knees they take a beating during sheering of the knee

You'll know when something like that happens.

Believe me. . .you would know it if you tore an ACL. . .

When this happened to me in 1994. . . I was on crutches.

It was probably tendons shifting around. . .be super cautious if the pain becomes worse. Sounds to me like you still have plenty of functionality.

Yes, I'm just paranoid. I have some goals, and I need to accomplish them within a certain timeframe, so I don't want any setbacks.

I've been doing slow bodyweight squats occasionally since after the workout. I think the patella or something surrounding just got a little irritated. It's like 9 out of 10 times there's no pain now when I do a full bodyweight squat. I think it's a tracking problem. When I stand with my feet straight, my knees point inwards. Do you think that would have anything to do with it, since my feet point outwards on squats? Torque force? I'm starting to look into what foot position minimizes torque.

start doing your stepups and cable splitsquats, see the defranco site, the current ask Joe page

Yes, I check that site regularly. I did step-ups last cycle and was doing the split squats for this cycle. Had no problems until today. Non-working leg beared more weight than it should I guess. I don't really get how he does the cable split squats.

Do you think it's a tracking issue from how I described my knees pointing and that rolling feeling of tendons/ligaments(?) on the outside of my knees when descending?

I don't know, but something is weak, do your cable split squats on a wobble board or sitfit. It needs to be unstable to get the VMO to fire.

Lean to contract the VMO at will when your standing.

Well I'm reluctant to do split squats with my knee going forward. I hear grinding and it doesn't feel real good.

I don't get how cable split squats work. I'm just going to take off split squats next week. Do a bunch of bodyweight squats, high rep weightless leg extensions and lunges throughout the days until Monday. Might also do some Peterson step-ups. If everything feels ok, then I'll do back squats.

It was weird that after that first set where I hurt my right knee working the left leg, I felt no pain working my right leg. Only pain with the left leg.

Also do single leg quarter squats with the knee going forward, stay vertical, a good warmup for the knee and VMO.

Eccentrics are good for this as well.
