Help me decide something...

Alot of people have been asking me how my job is. The pay is great but I have learned alot about gov't in a short time.

Many of the services here are obscolete compared to the commercial or private sector. Many of the databases here are still running on old digital alpha machines which are hardly supported now.

Even worse then that is the overall sense of laziness I see. People including myself are walking around the building stretching thier legs and what not to stop from falling asleep. People are afriad to change existing jobs or services because that requires work. People are collecting a pay check and retirement and from what I see may be working 3 out of an 8 hour day. I don't wanna hear anything from the conservatives because conservatives run the state of Florida... This behavior is anything but conservative. My problem is that I get boored quick. I don't wanna sit and just do nothing. I think time is important also...

Tell me what yo think. Should I continue to collect 6 figures from the gov't to do nothing or should I go back to Atlanta and work in the private sector?

Private sector before you commit suicide. Sometimes it's not only about the money. Getting back home and having no clear idea of how you spent your day at work is the perfect recipe for disaster. Also, the public sector has too many rules. You wont see your boss coming into your office and giving you a nice 10%. No , you're most likely getting an annual flat raise which has nothing to do with your performances. So the guy sitting next to you and beating his Johnson all day gets the same as you. Depressing....

That's a tough one. . .good paying govt jobs don't just fall out of trees and the pension (if you hang around long enough) is usually pretty sweet. . .particularly for the good paying jobs. However, I've always been of the mind that, if you can make more money somewhere else, doing a job that you actually enjoy, living someplace that you love, that's kind of hard to beat.

Gotta decide what you're in the game for. Pension or gratification??

Funny, my buddy just emailed me not even 5 minutes ago and was telling me how he is busy this week trying to spend money buying things before the fiscal year ends. It's a government job and they have ot spend money or else they may not receive as much next year.

That's the government and our tax dollars in use.

Oh and yes he takes off work all the time and when he is there he hardly does anything...just like the rest of the leeches.

Personal opinion bro, it all depends on how unhappy you are in your current position. If the pay does NOT compensate for the lack of employment interest then yes...move. Life is too short to be wasting your time.

If you feel the pay is worth sitting back on your ass doing mundane tasks that do not challenge you to your full capabilites then stay where you are.

It should make you angry to be making that kind of salary on the backs of taxpayers without earning it. My wife used to work for the government and having a window into that environment made me realize it is even worse than most people say.

GJ,

I would take my time finding the perfect private sector job, however you should go to the most cutting edge company you can find, hopefully on the verge of going public.

That is my opinion, best of luck.

Thanks all

I've never been in a position where there are 2x the workers needed to do the work on hand. It's horribly wasteful... You would think with all the eyes looking on the same problem that they'd have stuff together.... Well it's just the opposite. The word clusterfuck comes to mind...

Anyway, You know it's funny... As soon as I typed this someone asked me to come back to New Orleans.

Well you've learned a lot about the IRS i'm assuming. Is there a revolving-door job in the private sector where you could exploit (yes, I chose that word deliberately) your inside knowledge and relationships? Maybe find a tax relief firm or an "IRS consulting" firm that would appreciate you making calls on behalf of your new-found clients.

P.S. I really do empathize with you. You should get out ASAP, but on your terms -- with a killer private sector opportunity. The government sucks the life out of far too many otherwise productive people.

P.S.S. Privatization fixes government malaise :)
