Help!! I just hurt my back bad.

Ok I was deadlifting just now and hurt my lower back really bad. It just felt like a twinge, I got rid of it quick and then I felt just horrible. I can't stand or walk very well, and it is constant. It hurts more in some positions more than others, seated seems to be best. I won't be able to see the doc till tomm or mon. Please help, what do I do now? Ice it? Lay down? Stretch? Sit?

Sorry if this doesn't make a lot of sense, I can't really think clearly.

If you have Aleve around(or a generic Naproxen Sodium), then I would pop two(2) of those right now to help control any inflamation that you might have in the area. I would get an ice pack ready now and find the most comfortable position you can get yourself into bro, and keep Ice on for 30 minutes & off for 30 minutes. Keeping the inflamed tissue down to a minimum right now is key to recovering sooner. Good luck my man. It sounds like you may have a disk or two out of whack.

Btw, whatever you do-DO NOT stretch it at this point. I would try to stay as immobile(and that doesn't sound like it is going to be a problem for you) as you can right now, and stay in that Ice. Stretching it out, weather it is muscular or spinal, is going to do nothing but aggravate it at this stage of an injury.

If you have ALEVE(naproxin sodium) start taking it immediately.2-3 tabs every 4-6 hours will really ease the discomfort.Been there, done that many times.Nothing is more debilitating than a fucked up lower back.

It is definitely a disk then brother. If it(they) are misaligned, then they are effecting nerves that run down your lower back & legs. I doubt you have anything as serious as a "pinched" nerve(cause then you wouldn't feel anything), but you are definitely getting some unwanted pressure from the misalignment. Get your wife, or girl to get that Naproxen Sodiun to you asap bro, if you don't have any. That is important. Usually it takes a week for me to recover from this type of injury(I have it in my neck though), but I have hurt it so many times that I have become a fast healer due to redundency I guess. The first time is always the worst though. When you get back to the gym, you obviously want to take it easy on that lower back bro. If you do any squats, deads, PCs, or Leg Presses, make sure to go LIGHT. I'm sure that is obvious though, but I feel bad for you(cause I've been there) and I don't really have any other advice for you so I'm rambling. Take it easy. I hope they can give you something at the Docs tomorrow that will help you out even more. Ask for PKs if you need them. I would insist if they are reluctant for some Percs or something, if your pain is indeed that bad. Sometimes they can be stingy & just give you Motrin.

Alright I'm much better this morn (although I get sharp pain if I move wrong), and I'm sure I'll be even better when I get these scipts for my muscle relaxers and loratabs. I'm hoping that I'll be able to work tomm, and start light upper body work by mid-week. Thanks again guys.

Advice

I'm no expert, but I did herniate a disc once. How much better are you feeling exactly? My pain came and went. I saw a chiropractor. When I went back to the gym after waiting to take time off to begin with, the next I was a hurtin batard. Take it easy. Ease into things this week. See how it goes. If you're fine, that's great. If not, I would tell you get a good chiropractor (You may have to try a few) and get an MRI immediately. That's if you run into any problems. Just in case, the faster you know what's wrong exactly and are getting good treatment and rest, the faster you will be back. Good luck.

Hope you will feel better soon Doc! Deadlifts can really mess your back up. Never try to force one more rep with the deads!! You may also try to apply heat to your lower back for some relief. You most likely pulled a muscle, which will heal in due time.

Doc,

If it still continues to hurt bad after about 3 or 4 days, GET IT CHECKED OUT BY YOUR DOCTOR. I did the same thing about a year and a half ago and it ended up to be a herniated disk. I went to a chiropracter at first - prolly not the brightest idea. I'm STILL getting over it and it is affecting my ability to do certain exercises and stuff. I don't mean to scare ya, just be smart - if it hurts REALLY bad for a period longer than it might take to heal a muscle, you should get a professional to check it out.

Lol, boy do I know that now, that's exactly what I did. And got the heat and NSAIDs going, PKs and MRs are on there way.

Saw the doctor this morn, he got me all this stuff and told me not to bend over and to rest (expert advice huh? lol).

About a year ago I was doing deads, and on the last rep when I was coming up I heard a "RIIPPP". I wasn't able to do lower back until a week ago, almost a year. It hurt that whole time, I couldnt sit in certain positions. Its gone now. The lower back is the slowest healing muscle in the body so take it easy and give it time.

after some recuperation, a few ART sessions would be a good idea. you really want to keep the surrounding musculature loose so as to keep pressure off the low back.

Doc,
I hurt my lower back bad in 1996, and it can take some time to heal. (Thankfully it was all soft-tissue damage, no damage to discs, etc.) My biggest mistake was rushing back to back workouts too soon and messing it up even worse. Give it some time to heal. Ice it for two days. Then switch to heat to comfort it when needed. Learn to stretch it properly--alot. Then when you're ready, start training it again light, stretchin all the while.

But right now, GO SEE YOUR DR. and GO GET AN MRI done. MRI's are incredible technology, allowing you and your doc to see what's torn up inside there.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!
