My girlfriend is thinking of applying to law school. What characteristics does a person need to have in order to be a good and successful lawyer (personality)? What kind of law are you in? Thanks :)
 
You will never find a field where family connections mean more, doesn't matter where you go...

I have friends who are complete fucking dummy's and partied thru both law school and undergrad, however since their Dad's owned large firms, they are Partners...

It's not what you see on tv...mostly sucks as an occupation.
 
The typical law school graduates half its first year class. In the US 2/3 of practicing attorneys would choose a different career path. If her school offers it, a joint JD/MBA is a nice hedge and it only adds a year in most cases.
 
Good characteristics:

Unwavering self confidence
detail oriented
well written and spoken
quick on her feet


Those are a few characteristics that come to mind.

I have done different types of law, YG. For most of my career, I specialized in debtor-creditor law, but when I had my own firm I did bankruptcy, criminal defense, family law and various other civil litigation.

Your GPA is solid. What's your school's reputation and prestige? McGill and UT are the more prestigious uni's in Canada. If you're attending a festering TTT in decline, it will have some inpact on your LS admissions. You should really, REALLY study for the LSAT... and I mean starting 6 months prior with 5 days a week studying of several hours per day. If you bomb your first LSAT, your retake LSAT score will be averaged with your old one... a very bad situation if one does poorly on their first exam. Think of the LSAT as one of two main tickets to LS, the other being your average GPA over four years of full-time university study. Don't underestimate it's significance or think that multiple shots at taking it are free. ALso, make sure you brush up on your logic (or take a course in it)... the logic section can be harsh.

What tier LS are you aiming for? U.S. or Canadia?

I didn't miss a single question on the logic section. I never had a problem with those. I hate the games section. ugh.

Tell her to get a job in a law firm while she is in undergrad and see if she likes working in that atmosphere. Dealing with lawyers with nasty dispositions all day wears really thin, at least for me. Many lawyers are notoriously difficult people to be around.

I read a lot of people complaining about those. It probably varies significantly from person to person; some people are more logically-minded than others, and some have problems following it on the LSAT.

Personally, I think they should use symbolic logic exclusively. That stuff looks really SWeet and is pretty much code, lol. There's so many hundreds of different types of symbolic logic... too bad they don't use different symbols... my shorthand needs expansion outside of Greek and Latin letters. Temporal symbols are too limited, I already use all the propositional logic stuff, and deontic logic uses too many latin letters.

Also, if you go into BIGLAW, expect to be logging 8am-9pm days depending on your efficiency.

Personally, I think you should go into BIGSPACELAW. That's prestige, broly, lol.

Really, though, I studied pretty hard for the LSAT and nailed it the first time. I was pretty shocked. I took the princeton review course live and bought every practice book I could find in the book store and studied my ass off. That was a LONG time ago, though. 1996. It probably has changed since I took it.
 
My buddy went to Windsor and has been a very successful criminal lawyer for 15 years and makes mad cheddah

I am back in it already, sweetie. I'm just doing it on a contract basis for the moment. I get to work from home this way until the bambino gets here.
