heart attacks and A.S.

A PhD psychologist that I know recently lost an associate to a heart attack. He was in his mid 30s. He had NO family history of heart attacks and it is believed the etiology of his heart troubles was due to the A.S. he was on. Consequently he and the psy. that i knew were both doing A.S. research on the anxiety/stress/AS correlation. From the info I have heard he was an occasional user that did NOT stack. A few weeks ago a deca user died of a heart attack. My question is this: Is there a more prominent risk of heart attack on A.S.? I mean if a person can die in his 30s with no history of heart trouble in his family...it seems like anyone can die? I am an A.S. user and advocate. I have learned alot through my years on this board...but I am starting to think there is more for me to learn about the consequences of AS use...especially the psychosocial aspects of AS. what do you think of this?

hard to tell

people die in there 30's of heart attacks. Some because they have weak or bad hearts and this was never discovered. To die of an heart attack due do roids, one must take a lot of them or have heart problems in general.

Not likely it was from AS use.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest and AAS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is the relationship between Sudden Cardiac Arrest and AAS overstated? Because of things said in the media many guys using AAS, in the back of their minds, are waiting for a heart attack that most likely isn't coming. A post here the other day reminded me of this.

Anabolic steroid abuse and cardiac sudden death: a pathologic study.

Fineschi V, Baroldi G, Monciotti F, Paglicci Reattelli L, Turillazzi E.

CONTEXT: Androgenic anabolic steroids (AAS) used for improving physical performance have been considered responsible for acute myocardial infarction and sudden cardiac death. OBJECTIVE: To establish the relationship between AAS and cardiac death. DESIGN: Case report. PATIENTS: Two young, healthy, male bodybuilders using AAS. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Pathologic cardiac findings associated with AAS ingestion. RESULTS: The autopsy revealed normal coronary arteries. In one case, we documented a typical infarct with a histologic age of 2 weeks. A segmentation of myocardial cells at the intercalated disc level was observed in the noninfarcted region. This segmentation was the only anomaly detected in the second case. No other pathologic findings in the heart or other organs were found. Urine in both subjects contained the metabolites of nortestosterone and stanozolol. COMMENT: A myocardial infarct without vascular lesions is rare. To our knowledge, its association with AAS use, bodybuilding, or both lacks any evidence of a cause-effect relationship. The histologic findings in our 2 cases and in the few others reported in medical literature are nonspecific and do not prove the cardiac toxicity of AAS.

I am 45 years old and have done a lot of juice in my lifetime. Last year I aquired the flu from hell I went untreated for weeks thinking that I would shake it . When I finally went to the ER my blood O2 sat was 52. That night I went into complete respirtory arrest, kidney failure and several minutes of cardiac arrest. My wife and family were told that it would be unlikely that I would live, I was on a couple forms of life support for 3 days. I was tissue typed and it was sent to Mayo clinic, my cardioligist believed that I would need a heart transplant because I had contracted both bacterial and viral endocarditis. To make very long story short a week later I went home. My heart fully recovered my doctor that the only explanation for my recovery was my lifestyle, My arteries are absent of plaque. The doctor also said that if I did not have a history of steroid use ,my heart would have been to weak to withstand everything, swelling and beating over 240 beats a minute for three days.

That is a GREAT post, Glad to hear you are okay buddy, that sounded like some serious stuff.

While that study does not prove any cause-effect it does not seem to disprove it either. It is not like they said "A condition was found that had existed since birth". I don't mean to be alarmist here but that study is not gospel.

Well maybe it is only the findings and opinions of 5 PhD's who work in this field. Did I say only? If you can introduce me to a physician or researcher anywhere that will tell you his or anyone else's research, findings or opinions are "gospel" I would like to meet him. You can't possibly expect anything to be written by anyone with that much knowledge and have them profess it to be the end of any discussion. This is merely a volley back at those who say that AS causes Heart Attacks. This study is very recent and the ball is now in the other court, but at least there are two sides to this now. Let the other side prove AS DOES cause Heart Attacks, because there is now reason to believe it doesn't.
