Heart and Steroids?

DP38

If the heart is considered a muscle, does it gain strength on AS?

I don't know if it is a stupid question, but the heart work hard when doing cardio.

well, i have to disagree here, skeletal muscle and cardiac muscle are completely different tissues. Its possible im sure to have an enlargement of the heart, but i suspect that is due to higher BP and more strain on it, not the androgens making it "grow" cardiac muscle doesnt work that way

I'm going to a cardio doc this week and I plan on discussing these issues with him. My BP is high and I'm having a doppler and EKG and some other scan. I'll post what he says about AS use and your heart.

I recently had an xray of my chest and my heart was at least 50-75% bigger than what a normal heart would be. - cbeaks

It's unlikely that AAS have a direct effect on cardiac muscle hyperthrophy, but the "side effects" of AAS will enlarge the heart. Obviously, too much of an enlargement is a problem.

What's also interesting is that both too low or too high of a testosterone level can increase the chances of heart attack. And in case you're wondering, the levels on most cycles put you in the "too high" catagory. Sorry. But if your T is less than 350, that's another reason to go on HRT.

Just to clarify, I have no heart problem, I was just wondering.

You have a lot of time to think on a bicycle ride!

Thanks for the answers

my gf is pre-med at BU and she told me that any use of AAS will have no effect on the growth of your heart or any other internal muscles...there are two types of muscles in the body, smooth and striated(sp?) dont flame me if i get them mixed up but i THINK smooth muscles are what makes up your heart, liver, brian and other internal muscles in the body while striated muscles are what make up your arms, chest, legs. etc etc...difference between them is that you can control striated muscles (flexing of chest, and bis....etc) while smooth you cant control...the ONLY muscle in the body that i know of that is made up of both is the lungs...you can make yourself breath faster and slower so i think mabye the lungs are the only internal muscle to be affected by AAS...only thing that can make heart bigger is cardio and other stuff like that

I have worked in Cardiac Surgery and I am a Cardiac Perfusionist and Vascular Specialist. A lot of athletes, especially those of aerobic and anaerobic exercise, have mild or upper limit size hearts. Another thing I would like to mention is that on EKG's, an inverted T-wave would normally point to ischemia or coronary obstruction...however, it is quite common in young athletes (16 - 37) to have an inverted t-wave. It is also quite common to have an elevated t-wave. (Always seek an ER for chest pain). Now, back to steroids. Steroids - itself will not actually grow the heart larger, BUT steriods can and often do enlarge hearts. Most chronic users of steriods will have trouble with their liver and/or heart. Chronic...meaning long term abuse. I would hope most of use do not abuse steroids and use them correctly by not being on them year after year after year all the time at extreme dosages.

Good post my man, except there is a third muscle type in the body "cardiac" the heart is its own type of muscle, unique from others muscles in the body. This is necessary because the heart never rests, well it does rest, but when it does you no longer have any worries.:D For a healthy heart a male is far safer with high teat levels than low test levels.:)

I have to disagree that cardio is the only thing that can make the heart bigger. My heart starts pounding really hard when I have a good leg workout and I think that would have more of an effect on growth than 30-40 minutes of low intensity cardio. Like I mentioned before, I apparently have a very large heart and I do cardio just 10-12 weeks out of the year before a contest. I don't do it at all in the offseason because I have a very high metabolism. - cbeaks

yeah i forgot about that, you are correct about cardiac muscle...but i dont mean ONLY cardio will make your heart stronger, i mean any activity where you heart has to work harder to pump blood into the veins (running, working out, sex, getting scared) will make it bigger and stronger...only difference is using AAS wont make it grow any faster than not using them...isnt there a medical term for an overgrown heart? i dont think having a oversized heart is healthy
