If so do you have any training tips for a beginner? My wife and I decided to challenge ourselves since we have stopped running for about a year. Gonna train through the summer and enter a few in the fall. Any personal experiences?

I've done 5ks before......I just started running short distances and worked my way up into running longer & longer distances.....

I used to run 10k three times a week and 20k three tmes a week. I generally finishd the 20k around 66 minutes.

I've run a half marathon.

To train for it, your main run should be a long one every weekend. start out doing 3-5 miles, then every week up it by a mile until you get up to 14. Don't worry about pace for this run, just do it to get the distance in.

In addition to the long run, do at least two other runs per week at 3-5 miles each.. these are the runs where you work on your speed.

Then do a couple of slow casual jogs 1-2 times a week, so ultimately you are running around 5 times a week on average.

Take the day AFTER your weekly long run off to recover.

Search for "couch to 10K" running programs, then build to 1/2 marathon. I'm only doing 5 & 10K's this plus cycling. I did a hilly 50-miler Saturday.

I ran 12 miles once just to see how far I could run. I could have kept going. I don't care to look like a stick man so I would never run that far anymore.

That is actually one of my concerns, I am happy with my current mass, but I am sure that it will diminish a bit. We shall see.

The most I've ever run in one day was about 29 miles, maybe 30. It was just after I ate a box of Frankenberry cereal and I was pissed that I let myself do that, so I went down to the beach by my house and ran to the point. Then I just kept on running like Forrest Gump. To the next point. To the state park. Canal entrance. Then I said hell with it I'll make it worth my while and run to the next town. It was a nice area so I'll give it that much. On the way back though it sucked. Let's just say I traveled 30 miles, cuz on the way back I probably only ran a total of 5 miles before my legs hurt. I walked the last few miles home in the dark. :sulk:

Another afternoon I ran as far as I could see (and then some) in the other direction, so I like to say I own that entire Lake Superior beach. :)
