Has Anyone Here Had Experience Teaching K-12?

So part of this Outreach program I'm involved in at school has some of us teaching a small group of juvenile delinquents some science and stuff after school. They're all around grades 7-9 or so. I think they've already been kicked out of public school and stuff. Nothing inner-cityesque or anything, just fighting and drugs and stuff.

Does anyone with experience teaching care to share their dealings with these kind of kids? Even the education majors in the program with us are kinda not sure where to take things for the next eight weeks.

i deal with kids every day... it's my job.

talk to them like they are people instead of talking down at them like most people do. Be honest and if they ask a question that the answer is "yes" but you THINK you should say "no"... say yes... being honest will earn their respect and trust.

at the same time, if someone needs to teach you to deal with a certain population, odds are you wont be very good at it.

also.. i've worked with city kids (detroit and pontiac) and suburb kids... kids are kids.. just different skin color and back grounds...

one more thing... i dont think it would be good if you went in with a cocky attitude... go in quiet, learn about the kids a little with some games (cards, board games, basketball, anything you can) before you start in on them with stupid shit like science.. remember, they likely DONT WANT to be there but it's human nature to want to learn and kids love to learn as long as they arent put on the spot (meaning making them go against one of their "leaders" ie cool kids).

I was one of those kids not too long ago

just treat them like people ^ , there is no real standard, I mean everybodys different

dont stress if your not mr. superhero to them

the fact that you are even putting the effort to do this is so very very good

just remeber they are isolated and angry, (juvy is hard on the mind, just as any concept of anything being forced)

so dont fret if they arent too open, they have their reasons too

I used to teach high school grades 9 -12.

Bottom line......fuck that.

Started teaching college courses, now an admin., never looked back......
