I never jumped until I started working with the government. Now I'm so addicted I do it as a hobby as well!
I say go for it. Go for the accelerated free fall (AFF) as your first jump. It's more expensive, but way better than a tandem jump and will lead you to USPA class A certification faster than any other method.
