Hammy, I'm thinking about getting my oldest daughter a hamster but I will ultimately have to do most of the care. Is it worth getting one for a 10 year old?

no cuz they poop and pee alot and kids wont keep em clean
my kids didnt keep theirs clean
but i have boys so your daughter may be differnet

If they get out of their cage, they will stash whatever scraps they can find in their jaws...pretty funny actually.

I had two hamsters growing up. Dusty and Gingerpie. I liked them...had all kinds of tubes and stuff for them to crawl around in. My best friend had gerbils...they were probably more fun.

What's the difference between a hamster and a gerbil??

I've been told they are cleaner...I think they are dry climate animals and produce less poop. Just more fun...my hamsters were nocturnal and ran around all night while sleeping all day. Gerbils just play more or something.

They are little brown furry guys with long tails.

one of my friends in 6th grade had one.

He was playing with it.. tossing it up and down.. through a basketball hoop outside.

Well one time he didn't catch it right and it fell on the cement.

Ever since then, its back legs didn't work anymore.

I felt bad for that poor hamster.

Bro, just get a small fish tank. Much easier.

Been there done that. EVERYTHING that we have put in there has died except the aquatic frogs. I think those things are immortal!

My sisters had hamsters/gerbils when they were younger. You do have to make sure the cages are properly cleaned so they don't start to smell. I think the novelty of a hamster/gerbil wears off pretty quickly, though...

Agreed, and make it saltwater....it's not as hard to take care of as most say. You will never get tired of looking at it either. A few live rocks and your tank will have life forms you didn't know existed.

Dunno if I ever mentioned I have a 185 gallon tank. It's down right now, but I'm setting it back up in the fall.

That's awesome...When I worked for SW, we got in a bunch of live rock for an exhibit. Stuff started getting snatched/eaten and I couldn't figure out why until I busted a ltitle octopus living in there. :chomp:

Fun stuff.

true. Might costy a little money to get it up and running and it takes a little slow introducing the fish to the new enviroment, but its all worth it. Afterwards it takes care of itself

I love saltwater tanks...it's like a little chunk of the ocean bottom You can tend to them for hours and not get bored.

yeap, saltwater tanks are far better than freshwater ones. Everything is better about them - the looks, the light, the fish, the live coral...

Agreed. Marine life is awesome to look at.

Do they have octopus or squid that can go in a aquarium?

I worked with a guy who had a pet octopus. A little one. It was funny to feed. They are pretty destructive so I dont think you can have much else if you have one.

I've never had any, but it's hit or miss at the pet store most of the time...some days you go in and see a huge variety of exotics...Urchins, Sharks, Seahorses etc... next day all you have are Damsels.

Then she got a couple rabbits and tried to give everyone in the neighborhood one. ;)
