Two Programmers Accused Of Extortion Plan Against MySpace Operators

LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles County prosecutors announced Wednesday the filing of felony charges against two New York computer programmers accused of hatching a plot to extort money from the operators of MySpace.com.

Shaun Harrison, 18, and Saverio F Mondelli, 19, were arrested last Friday by members of the Electronic Crimes Task Force when they traveled to Los Angeles for a meeting with MySpace.com "employees," who were actually undercover investigators from the U.S. Secret Service and Los Angeles Police Department, according to the district attorney's office.

Deputy District Attorney Jeffrey McGrath charged the Suffolk County, N.Y., men with one felony count each of fraudulent computer access and copying, sending a threatening letter for extortion and attempted extortion.

The two, who operated a Web site called myspaceplus.com out of Medford, N.Y., allegedly took advantage of vulnerabilities they found in the MySpace.com Web site, authorities said.

The pair developed a computer code that enabled them to get personal information on MySpace users, McGrath alleged.

MySpace.com went to the task force earlier this year after its technicians discovered the code and blocked it, according to the District Attorney's Office.

During the course of the investigation, the men allegedly threatened that unless $150,000 was paid, a new, unbreakable code would be released.

Harrison and Mondelli, who pleaded not guilty Tuesday, are due back at the downtown Los Angeles courthouse June 5 for a hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to require them to stand trial.

They remain jailed on $35,000 bail each and have agreed to remain in Los Angeles while the case is pending.

The defendants could face more than four years in state prison if convicted, according to the district attorney's office.
