Gym Question.

I am thinking of quitting the YMCA. I used to go in the mornings and there would be like 3 people in the weight room. (like 30x25). Not too many for a room that size. Most are Old people that stick to the machines. In my time before, I had seen maybe 4 different people in the free weights. Now, I am guessing because of summer, when I go at 8 in the morning, it is PACKED. 15 people or more! The smell of BenGay and denture glue is overwhelming.

So, I am thinking of leaving the Geriatric farm and questing towards a gym with a more serious atmosphere.
I have been told it is best to stick a gym that is not too far, so I shall list the ones I am familar with.

Golds Gym- Contract, don't have 200+(spare) dollars yet to sign up. I could be wrong, but last time I went there it was that way. Shame too, it is very close.

24HrFitness- Easy payment, Not so far away. (5-6 miles) From what I heard I would be jumping from the geriatric farm into the cesspool of idiots though. I always hear BAD things about everything though.

World Gym- A bit far away from me truthfully. Probably a 20 min drive. (different town) (hot chicks though)

Olympia gym- (Ronnie Coleman was just there this last weekend from what I hear doing signing) Far away, right near work, would have to change at work (I get very very dirty) to go directly to gym after work, or drive 30 mins home, change and shower, and drive 30 mins back.

Only gyms I know of, besides Ballys and a sports gym, both of which are farther than all these.
So of the 4 choices which should I go for? Personally I am for the 24hr fitness, as I work nights, and keep night hours even on the weekends, and could incorporate a workout day on the weekends. But I met a chick at a party that works at Worlds gym, and wouldn't mind seeing how she has been lately. (or how she will be shortly after that) So far to drive for a casual hello that probably wouldn't turn into anything.

So how bad IS 24 hr fitness? Or should I save up 200+ dollars and enter a contract with Golds Gym?

Not yet. :( Have a dinky apartment, my next move in a year or so will probably be in a house or duplex or something that could have one. It is a goal.

Yeah, but it is even further of a drive. Untill I move at least. (probably will move to Blue springs)
How is the freeweight area there?

Dude, Don't give up on the Y.
I have seen this happen for years every summer and it only lasts about 3 weeks...

Is there another Y nearby with a bigger Free Weight area ?
Ours is pretty big and loaded with CYBEX plates, Bars, DB up to 120lbs 2 Squat/power racks, Smith Machine, Cables, Roman, a dozen movable benches, 7 flat/incline/decline benches and more...

The Newer YMCA's are much better than they were in the old days.
Also in the evenings is when most of the younger crowd hits my Y.
I go in the EARLY morning before the Soccer moms and Granny's get up...

As long as you are serious with your training, every gym will work in you advantage. Stay focused on what you do, and you will feel at home in any gym.

Your gym is more packed because of summer? weird, mine is even more deserted, if that is possible.

YMCA's are family Oriented and since School is out, all the Mom's and Dad's bring the rats in to get them out of the house..

Also, College and HS kids come in to get ripped in 3 weeks time for the beach.

It is a little bit of a drive, 20-30 mins depending on traffic.

Free weight area's not bad in my estimation, but my exposure to other gyms is limited. It's not setup well for PL style training, but there's plenty of other stuff.

never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never never sign a contract.

i am a member at a 24 hr fitness gym and i love it,not to big a row of cardio and the rest is weights, and its cheap as hell for me

ive also heard horror stories of these damn gym,so id say get a free pass and try each one out

If you go to Gold's see if you can just get a year's membership. If not then move to the next best option. As Warik said, no contracts. I'm sure some people here have had bad experiences.
