tongkat ali: By Serge Kreutz
Version 3.0, December 2001
Tongkat ali is a herbal medication (Jamu) widely used in Malaysia as an aphrodisiac for men. In Indonesia, the same medication is know as pasak bumi.
Even though it is largely unknown in the US and Europe, the prosexual effect of tongkat ali is actually well documented in Western science. Anybody can check this for himself at the Medline database.
The best Medline URL (there are others) is:

To search for scientific information, one has to use the plants scientific, Latin name, Eurycoma Longifolia. The plant is also a proven therapeutic and preventive medication against malaria, so in order to focus the search on the prosexual properties, one should use the additional search term "sexual".
I have tried several tongkat ali and pasak bumi products. The medication is surely not in a league with yohimbe. But I haven't had any definite failure for as long as I tried tongkat ali or pasak bumi (as it would happen when I am entirely sober), so it does seem to support sexual function.
This is already quite positive a result considering that I found such alleged aphrodisiacs as the amino acid arginine, or the South American herbal muira puama, or ginseng, entirely worthless as aphrodisiacs.
Sure, I grant that some other herbals may actually be healthy, ginkgo biloba for the brain, and ginseng for the kidneys (or whatever they want), but for the vital organ, they do nothing. Having the choice between ginseng and tongkat ali, I would go for the later. Tongkat ali's way of enhancing sexuality isn't the same as yohimbe's, though. Yohimbe is an alpha-2 adrenergic blocker; tongkat ali has been scientifically proven to work on testosterone levels.
While I do have benefit from sexual enhancement drugs such as yohimbe, Viagra, and apomorphine (my current favorite), I seem to be sexually numb for any kind of testosterone modulation. I have tried direct testosterone replacement therapy, I have tried DHEA and andro, then Tribestan, a combined therapy of clomiphene and anastrozole, and tongkat ali. I don't doubt that most or all of these therapies have increased my testosterone levels. They certainly did. But this didn't express itself in enhanced sexual pleasure or performance. Mostly I felt an increased level of aggressiveness. And during a few weeks when I tried generous dosages of tongkat ali, I seemed to gain muscle even though I only do moderate weight exercise. Nevertheless, other people have reported that they do have a prosexual effect from almost any kind of testosterone enhancement… be it outright testosterone replacement therapy, DHEA, or tongkat ali.
In Southeast Asia, that's for sure, tongkat ali is extremely popular among local men, and they all take it to enhance sexual performance, not to build muscle. Especially in Malaysia, it is more widely consumed than even yohimbe is in West Africa.
