Good use for board presses

My friend's been having shoulder problems lately. He saw a doc and might not have to get surgery, but he's been doing PT for it for about 6 weeks and taking some joint medicine. He just started lifting again, and he's been doing close grip benches off the boards I use for board press, and has ZERO pain in his shoulder. Eventually he should be able to do full ROM bench again, but for now the board press is working real well for him.


Just thought I'd throw that out there, since I see a lot of shoulder injury posts lately.
 
That's good info to have. Is it necessary to use the boards when doing this excercise or can you just stop halfway down on the descent and press the weight back up, kind of like lock-outs?
