For those who eat bars:

Glycerine is a sweet oily substance that contains a three carbon sugar alcohol structure.

So it's a sugar! Not exactly, glycerine is not considered as a sugar or a fat technically it's considered a humectant which causes the body to hyper hydrate (hold water).

So why are we talking about this chemical? Good question. Glycerine is used to add moisture content and to act as a binder in almost all protein bars.
The problem is the glycerine content in not on the label and technically it adds to the carbohydrate content.

We have taken some of the more popular bars and dissected the labels to find what the calorie deficiency is. Then using a simple formula (see below) taking into account that protein and carbohydrates are both 4 calories per gram and fat is 9 calories per gram. Glycerine containing 4.32 calories per/ gram. You can find out the calorie deficiency.
 
I think glycerine should be considered analagous to fructose. 4 calories/gram, does not affect blood sugar, probably DOES affect liver glycogen/ketosis, and does not effect leptin.
 
I don't want to promote Next Nutrition - but those wiley makers of the infamous Designer protein bars (which actually taste pretty damn good) are now calling glycerine a revolutionary 'new carb' that "promotes fat loss".....

...what do you make of this - besides it being an obvious attempt to sell more bars....any merit to the claims??
