Glucosamine supplements have recently been noted to adversely affect insulin resistance. A paramedic (personal communication) who takes glucosamine for his arthritis discovered that, although he has never been diabetic, his blood glucose rises over 100 points when he is on a 1500 mg/day regimen of glucosamine sulfate. The literature suggests that in some individuals it is possible for glucosamine to induce inhibition of liver glucokinase, imparing the ability of postprandial hyperglycemia to suppress endogenous glucose manufacture by the liver.
