like you did? so hire a professional photographer and have him take your picture, photoshop the living hell out of it to make it look perfect (almost like, I don't know, as if it had been in a magazine or something)? Is that what you mean?

i was thinking more along the lines of going into the bathroom right after you're done working out and snap a photo of yourself while you're still all sweaty and shiny.

then take your photo into photoshop and pretty it up a bit.

sort of like going from this . . .

Well ajtomasi, you certainly lucked out with your bathroom picture (or, you’re a master at using what you’ve got to work with). I believe you (which, truth be told, I didn’t until you posted the original shot), but I have to give you a hand for what you've done in PhotoShop. I could have sworn that it was a picture taken by a pro... (take that as a compliment)

I've been both in front of and behind the camera countless times (although I'm just a pro wannabe) and I also know my way around PhotoShop. The reason I thought your avatar was a pro shot is that it’s definitely looks like a shot lit in a professional studio with professional lighting. It’s lit (by your bathroom lights) to accentuate definition and still keep a "soft" feeling. That's not an easy thing to do, It's like trying to use direct sunlight--which creates dramatic contrast--and still keep the end result somewhat "soft". To get technical, this is a combination of what's known as specular lighting (creating deep shadows and hard-edged highlights and shadow transitions). A flash or direct sunlight would do this. The other component is what's called diffused lighting, which creates low contrast "soft" lighting. There are often no pronounced highlights or shadows produced from this. An overcast sky or multi-directional lighting in a studio would do this. This image is a combination of both.

Have you seen the self-pics that come out of people’s bathrooms? I've never seen anything like this before. And no amount of PhotoShopping can (realistically) fix an image that's not there to begin with.

Ajtomasi, you either have a real talent for this or your lucked out big time. You probably don’t remember, but I had two avatars of myself (one in black tank and one in a white tank). I eventually took ‘em down because people thought I was someone else (can’t even remember his name, but he clearly a jackass and I got sick of people asking me if I was him). Both images were self-images and it took me FOREVER to get them right (at home, not in a studio). I could tell you the entire story but it would bore you to tears. It took two days all in all.

Anyway, I completely apologize for suggesting that your avatar was fake. I made a mistake... I definitely owe you an apology.

no harm done at all. i completely sympathize with everything you said.

i'll be honest that i feel it's probably the best photo i've ever taken of myself.

i think one of the major items that really makes a difference is that my bathroom has four fluorescent lights rather than normal bulbs. these are the bulbs that look like spirals rather than normal round bulbs. a lot of times these bulbs really make whites whiter and blacks blacker and produce a more cleaner light.

thanks for the compliment, here's some karma.

I doubt that but sure, I'll keep it to myself... ;) My point is that you probably have a "perma-tan", right? A slightly darker skin color than most white guys? That would explain why there's so much definition in the shot even though it's a simple "bathroom shot". Ever wondered why all pros use all kinds of chemicals to look as dark as possible before a show? D-E-F-I-N-I-T-I-O-N...

How can I get it into my avatar though? I am an idiot.

Tuc, right click on the image, click select save picture as. Then save it to your desktop as a JPEG file meaning save it as name.jpg. Then go to your profile, edit options, scroll to the bottom and click the button change avatar. Then click the browse button and select the JPEG file from your desktop and click okay.
