Girlfriend needs a good routine

My girlfriend is one of those skinny wimpy girls. She has been going to the gym with me on and off for about 2 years now. I have not noticed much of a change in her muscle definition in that time. She always seems to finish way quicker than me, like today I trained chest and she did chest and legs and she was done 10 minutes before me and I only trained for an hour. What type of training split do you hardbody girls do and what advice could I give her to help put on some muscle and tone up, thanks.

Does she want to make progress or do you want her too? I am not being smart alecy here -- but seemingly, if she wants to build then why not bring her here and she can talk to some of the best minds in fitness.

What does her diet look like? How about training TOGETHER same body parts? Is she lifting wieghts heavy enough or is she doing the endless reps at low weights? Lifting for women is the same as for men....and no we do not bulk up with heavy weights. If that were the case, I would be alot bigger than I am now.

Please let us know what kind of food program she is on, what her workout looks like. And if she is trying to put on muscle, what kind of cardio is she doing?

There are alot of variables that could be hampering her success. And, she should come here and see first hand how she can get some really great information.

You can't force someone to be interested in weights and building muscle. It sounds to me like she's just going through the motions, much like 70% of gym members.

As newgirl said, it's all about overloading the muscle, consciously working to increase the amount of weight you use each time you go to the gym.

Does she ask questions of you, soes she ask you if she's doing things right......if not she doesn't sound all that interested.

I see countless girls go to the gym BECAUSE they're boyfriend goes and they just potter around doing SFA.

I agree with the other two posters .. First of all she herself should have a genuine interest in fitness workout. Then changes in her workout (heavy weights, low reps: the same as you) and diet (more energy than she uses, lots of protein, complex carbs, not too much fat (and mostly unsaturated), no simple carbs) will do the trick w/o making her fat. It did for me ...

Ditto on agreement. The #1 question is does she want to add muscle? SO many girls (though not on these boards) WANT to look "skinny and wimpy" because it's considered fashionable by people who don't know any better ;). Maybe she's just going to the gym because you're there. :bigkiss:

It's true what VG said about 70% of gym members just going through the motions. The sad thing is many really want their bodies to change, but they keep doing the same workout day in and day out and never challenging their bodies. Then there are those who think just by virtue of being IN the gym, that their bodies should improve.

Saying she does want to add muscle, she'll need to train with enough intensity to challenge herself. It takes challenge to change the body. She doesn't need to lift a long time (I rarely lift more than 45 min, except legs @ an hour). At the end of that time, I'm spent, but it's a good spent.

If her diet is lacking in nutrients and/or calories, it won't matter much what she does in the gym. Many women make the mistake of undereating and overtraining, and no matter how much hard work is done in the gym, the body can't get stronger and better without the right nutrients going in.

If you can tell us more about how she's currently training and eating, we'll be more help.
