Club Drugs: GHB, an Anabolic Steroid

Anabolic steroids, one type of club drugs being used by young people, are gaining in popularity because of their euphoric, sedative, and bodybuilding
effects. Despite research that has shown a decrease in most drug use—including crack cocaine, crystal methamphetamine, and cigarette smoking—the
1999 Monitoring the Future survey found a significant increase in the use of anabolic steroids among 8th and 10th graders, primarily boys (NIDA,
Monitoring the Future, 1999.)

Anabolic steroids are synthetic derivatives of the male hormone testosterone, which promotes skeletal muscle growth. The most popular anabolic
steroid among young people is GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate). GHB used to be widely available for medical purposes. The illicit use of GHB rose to
such levels that the 106th Congress called the drug “an imminent hazard to the public safety.” Congress amended the Controlled Substances Act in
January 2000 to a national awareness campaign, led by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the attorney general, targeting

"And they wonder why noone believes them". lol! Thats a good point. But then, these are the same boneheads that are still saying that MJ is a physically addictive drug now aren't they!? This despite ZERO proof to back their case & OVERWHELMING proof to the contrary. I mean, even my 90 year old Grandma, whos never so much as smelled MJ(that I know of) knows that it isnt addictive---seriously. The thing is, when kids who dont know any better hear the government say that MJ is addictive when they know it aint, they may assume that the Gov. is full of shit when it comes to ALL drugs. I feel that this is one of the major reasons that more & more kids are trying harder drugs like H. They are convinced that everything bad they have heard about drugs is bullshit. Lie to them once and you lose them forever---the government just assumes that everyone is stupid and will believe what they tell you to believe. Hard to imagine anyone thinking that way about American kids, who are peobably more synical than any kids on the planet. This is also why drugs should be a medical issue & not political. The people who fight the drug war dont know dick about what they are fighting. Thats one of the reasons that Steroids are a C3, when they meet NONE of the qualifications to be put in that category of drugs.
