Getting modeling jobs.

Is the process as simple as sending a portfolio to companies that you like and hoping that they will be interested and contact you? A photographer I met offered free prints for a test shoot and then $25 an hour if they are interested in any additional shoots after that. I'd like to send those and previous pictures to a few companies (assuming that's the right procedure) and see what happens.

go ahead and send me your pics, some without your pants on, and ill evaluate you for free bro

Uhhh..are you in the business or something? I wasn't really asking for people to evaluate me..I can look in the mirrior and know I look as good as some of the people that I see in ads. I was asking more if there is any special process people usually follow in submitting a portfolio.

lol

you two should get a room

get a zed card printed... then find an agency that wants to list you.. they should never charge a FEE... only a percentage of jobs.

You need to have an impressive portfolio that represents you artistically or in a fashionable/marketable sense.
There are plenty of freelance photographers out there, check the internet, your local guides etc. Do get reputable photographers though - they know how to capture you from a more artistic angles and bring up perspectives to best represent you.

Sometimes there are also scouts on the streets looking for other potentials. They are always on the look out for potential models.
If they spot you and see something in you, they'll give you the agency's name card and they'll want to see you and shoot you, examine you, criticize you, appraise you and see if you have the "it" factor or not.
You either have "it" or you don't.

If you choose to approach a particular agency, please do your research prior to rocking up there. Search the internet and you'll be able to find out where peeps like Naomi Campbell, Laetitia Costa, Christy Turlington etc go. These are the "Supermodels"...the forefront of modelling industry. It is true that your chances of obtaining jobs or more jobs (ie: advertisements, catwork, commercials etc) is via being represented by a very reputable and worldly-renounced modelling agency.

Each agency has its own conceptual style some go for the mixed look, rarer looks, orientals, - it's all about style and marketability.

Be aware that the modelling industry is HIGHLY competitive. It has its ugliness.
Also modelling for males are different as to the fundamentals behind it as supposed to the females.

Hey thanks for the info..what do you mean that it's different for males and females exactly?

Hello, Pumpkin,

It is a dirty, dirty, dirty world out there, Darling. But don't let it disappoint you - a modeling career can be very fullfilling and highly lucrative.

First of all, you should get a portfolio - something simple, that shows your enlarged pictures in several situations, in black and white, in color, with different clothes on, so you can show that you can be versatile. The models that book the most deals are the ones that can be portraited as the girl/boy next door or the sexy vixen or the millionaire buying a private jet or the person in the dairy aisle. Make sure your portfolio reflects your versatility.

Then, make a list opf agencies in your area. Large corporations never hire models directly - they go to an ad agency that designs the campaign and develops the photos/comercials. You should then knock on the door of each of those agencies and see if they would agree to list you. If they like you, they will most likely book a photogeny test for you, where they will use their own photographer, make up artist, costumes, etc. They will then use those pictures to represent you.

An agency should not charge you a sign up fee - only a percentage of the jobs they book for you.

I will try to think if there is something that I left off. In the meantime, have fun. Work it and make love to the camera!

I was one of the lucky ones.

I got noticed by a talent scout just walking down Oxford Street in London. He took some photo's of me with a digital camera, gave me his card and two days later I was on the agencies books and they had me booked in for a portfolio photoshoot. Didn't cost me a penny and the studios they sent me to were awesome.

Once I had my prints I began to recieve phonecalls from my agency offering me jobs for mostly fashion and catwalk stuff.

This was about a year ago, since then I have done some work for various UK high street fashion retailers as well as some catwalk.

Overall, i wouldn't really recommend trying to make a career out of it. The industry is very cutt-throat and half the people you meet don't have two brain cells to rub together. Having said that, it's a great way to earn a bit of extra cash and some of the jobs can be very fun. Especially when you get to work with some incredibly hot women :)

In my opinion, find yourself a good agency. That way most of the hard work is done for you.

Good luck mate!

Do your research and go to a reputable agency. No company will hire you off the street. First rule is you should not have to pay for anything. If they ask you for $500 to take your photos so they can create a portfolio for you, you're wasting your time. If you have the look that will get you work and generate revenue for the agency, they'll pony up.
