some black dude invented the steam engine too...

also Micheal Jordan pioneered the term "Sky Merchant"

Which black guy invented the steam engine? A blacksmith invented the steam engine...

I can't think of his name... but the guy was black... I'm sure some brainiac of American History on here knows his name... I'm mostly versed in Greek and Roman history

The steam engine was not invented by a black guy. That sounds like revisionist history. You may be thinking of Jeremiah Baltimore which, according to the internet, invented the stationary steam engine (hundreds of years after the first steam engine). As to what the difference is, I have no idea.

I can't recall his name either, but I do recall him being African American.

Dude, the first steam engine was invented by Thomas Newcomen in 1712. He was not a black man. He was a brit.

Here is a partial listing of black inventors... you can thank black people for ice cream, cell phones, refrigerators, typewriters, and the small pox vaccination... for just a FEW

C-ditty

I notice the steam engine is not on that list.
Oh, and don't you feel a little suspicious at taking a list of inventions by black people from a site entitled "The Afrocentric Experience"? Jesus, if I quoted a neo-nazi page people would never believe what it said, even if it WAS true.

A black man did not get CREDIT for the invention... that is why it is so controversial... Today, there are many instances of patent theft... I don't suppose you'd find it to hard to believe that blacky had his steam engine design stolen by whitey back in the 1800's do you?

As far as your beliefs on black people... to imply they are inferior in any manner would have holes in it... especially if you made this claim on a strictly genetic reasoning. Many factors put people in various situations in their life... sociology, history and the foundation of America are just a few... given the SAME opportunies from child birth, people SHOULD be able to, on average, be successful... there is some variance from individual to individual... but that is nature.

59 H.A. Jackson Kitchen Table
Kitchen Table???????????
I am finding that rather hard to believe?????????
They actually KNOW who was the first to put a table in the kitchen?

That site's credibility is highly suspect.

Here's another.
John A. Johnson Wrench
Right, you are telling me that before the 1700's or so, which is the EARLIEST that a black man named John A. Johnson could have lived (due to naming), the wrench was never invented? Pardon me while I laugh.

Another one is the inventor of the Gas Mask. He's not black, he's mixed race:

Another
O. E. Brown Horse Shoe 8/23/1892

BWAHAHAHAH! Horse shoes invented in 1892??? Tell that to farriers in England hundreds of years earlier. And it was probably invented before that, too.

Clearly, your site is highly suspect.

The steam engine was invented in 1712, not the 1800's. And it was invented in England, where there were very few slaves. How "convenient" that it was covered up by evil whitey.

Citrus - I am not unreasonable. If you can point me to some evidence of a black having invented the steam engine (and not some random website, the website should at least have references I could look up in a library if I wished), I will evaluate my view based upon i.

Unfortunately... Patent law really isn't what it USED to be. Meaning, there have been many changes. A black person was working on development of the steam engine in America at the same time an Englishman was working on it in England. The story goes, that they finished around the same time, but the black inventor got no credit. I have no proof other than his claims... which I could probably dig up... but the only sites that will have them will be sites that give a shit about black inventors (i.e., black sponsored sites).

I do believe it is written in quite a few history books... I remember the story from undergrad, how the dispute was "covered up".

Well... Levi invented denim... seems pretty normal? Some guy invented post-it notes, q-tips... mean, shit, q-tips are just cotton on a fucking stick! :)

There may have been "wrenches" but there may not have been THAT type of wrench he patented it, it could have been a crescent wrench... the kitchen table could be ofa certain variety... foldable.. etc.

It seems pretty simple to day, but back in the DAY... that shit was novel.

what a bunch of crap. a black man invented the small pox vaccination????

Thell that to Salk and Sabin.

Revisionist bullshit. The black man is trying to compenssate for his lack of contribution to western society and denigrate the accomplishments of the white race at the same time.

helicopter - jeez, tell that to Sikorsky (sp).

Man this really irratates me. I bet there are tons of little kids out there using this site as a reference to learn with and ignorant teachers approving.

How much shit did Green People invent?

If we ever want to get over racial issues, we have to quit categorizing this shit by color.....

who cares what color they were?

AND I thought Robert Fulton invented the steam engine....

"Fulton's Folly"...

That was the steam riverboat....but didn't he invent the engine also?

Well, in case you missed it last night, and I'm sure you did.... there were a few people implying that blacks were inferior and the implication was made that they contributed nothing to society...

Hence, the link to black inventors... all of the other posts were deleted but this one...

The kitchen table????? Don't know what we would have ever done if he hadn't thought of that.

I just brought one of my satellite speakers into my kitchen.

2/14/03 - bigguns7 invents the kitchen speaker

I'd also like to patent "kitchen music," "kitchen tunes, "the symphonic kitchen," and "kitchen concerts"

I just invented all of them.
