Gas prices around the world

Think you pay a lot for gas? Perhaps you'd prefer to live in Venezuela.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) – Gasoline prices in the United States, which have recently hit record highs, are actually much lower than in many countries. Drivers in some European cities, like Amsterdam and Oslo, are paying nearly 3 times more than those in the U.S.

The main factor in price disparities between countries is government policy, according to AirInc, a company that tracks the cost of living in various places around the world. Many European nations tax gasoline heavily, with taxes making up as much as 75 percent of the cost of a gallon of gasoline, said a spokesperson for AirInc.

In a few Latin America and Middle-East nations, such as Venezuela and Saudi Arabia, oil is produced by a government-owned company and local gasoline prices are kept low as a benefit to the nation's citizens, he said. All prices updated March, 2005.

Nation City Price in USD Regular/Gallon
Netherlands Amsterdam $6.48
Norway Oslo $6.27
Italy Milan $5.96
Denmark Copenhagen $5.93
Belgium Brussels $5.91

Croatia Zagreb $4.81
Ireland Dublin $4.78
Switzerland Geneva $4.74
Spain Madrid $4.55
Japan Tokyo $4.24
Czech Republic Prague $4.19

South Africa Johannesburg $2.62
Nicaragua Managua $2.61

Egypt Cairo $0.65
Nigeria Lagos $0.38
Venezuela Caracas $0.12

Put things in perspective.

those citizens also don't depend on that gas to get around either.

the poll should post up what the average amount of gallons is bought by them as compared to americans. There you'll see the glaring disparity.

Venezuela gas prices are so cheap 12 cents. I wonder how much it was selling for 5 years ago?

about the same... the Govt. sets the price of the gas... you don't have price fluctuations between the diferent gas stations.

We used to have 4 types of gas: 83Oct, 89Oct, 91Oct, 95Oct (why??? nobody knew...)

all with lead.

now they have 83 Cot 91Oct with leat and 95 without lead (if I remember correctly).

The gasoline is so cheap that with the price of one can of coke you can buy probably half a tank of gas... it is not something you really think about, bottled water is probably 100s times more expensive.

As you can imagine, it is a political weapon

My understanding is that China's Westernization program has taken away all of the slack in the oil system and demand is still rising. When you have that many people suddenly switching to driving cars and consumer electronics, it's no wonder that the system can't cope.

Gas taxation is hienous, though. I think we're somewhere around 80% tax in the UK but I'm not sure whether that includes purchase tax.

Also, in Amsterdam, most cars have 2 gas tanks. One for gasoline (benzine) and one for LPG (propane). The majority of people burn LPG when driving. Also, diesel cars are very popular. Very few families own more than one car, it's rare for every family member to have their own. Car owners have to pay a QUARTERLY road tax based on the weight of the car and that can get very expensive (but it helps keep SUVs off the road !!) A small light weight compact can run up to 50$/quarter in road taxes, SUVs up to $220/quarter.

But as Razorguns pointed out, the majority of people DO NOT need their cars to get around. Afterall, we still live in our cities and can walk to the grocery store, ride the tram to work and bicycle to the clubs on Saturday night (and take a date too!! - but I suppose those with weak egos might find that one difficult).

yes, the sale of diesel cars in Norway has shot up recently as well.

Of course, it took the government about a week, and now dielsel costs almost the same as regular 95.....oh its a joy to be living in Communist Norway

and who even knows that the price of fuel is truely controlled by about a few hundred guys wearing funny colored jackets and standing in a circle yelling/shouting numbers at each other..

why is oil going higher..because the traders plan to squeeze out every short positon in the market then when they are done itll go down..
it is not opec it is not iraq the news media needs to attach price action with some news event..the first thing i learned on the floor was that reading the papers and having a 'news" opinion was the dumbest thing you could do..In fact you know those interviews with the traders from the fllor on CNBC well hell i know quite a few guys who would just make shit up do you think the public wants to hear "the market went up because it wanted to"

Im sorry for those that want to think that this is part of a larger conspiracy be it Bush's policies or OPEC or whatever other shit you can conjure up..i spent close to 10 years in the oil pit..plus you get the 'locals" trying to pick tops and there are quite a few very large locals down there well when prices move 10 ticks against them and the ring knows hes short a few thousand lots hell everyone drives it up against thus prices go higher..sorry folks go down to North End Avenue and blame thos guys for your high oil prices :)
