Remember all those nerds - that all the other kids laughed at. Playing their D&D's during lunch period. Having no gfs. Reading computer books in the library.

Well guess who's laughing now? As the 'cool' kids are now in offices printing boring reports - guess who's living it up?

Recession Schmession.

Game Developer magazine announced findings of its seventh annual Game Developer Salary Survey. It found that the average game industry salary was $73,600 in the United States last year, up from $73,316 in 2006. Programmers earn the most on an average, with annual salaries of $83,383. They are also among the most highly educated group, with 50% having bachelor's degrees and about 26% having completed some graduate courses.

How many industries have an average salary of $73k?!

Time to start learning those 3d Modelling and Animation plugins kids.

They can thank Social Gaming such as World of Warcraft and Rock Band for this rise in spending on games.

Okay.

So formula so far is -- mad skills == higher money.

The myspace generation doesn't want to hear that tho.

r

Of course. MySPace generation wants big money with little skills and/or efforts. Might work for a while but on the long run it doesnt because you're basically replacable.

That's okay, foreigners are more than ready to pick up the slack, and take their jobs away too.

LOL..I made more than that as a business app developer and I live in middle America. :) X2 my salary in San Diego, New York or Chicago. :)

It's like any other industry, the most useless are the producers who do nothing and make the most money... the hardest working are the kids on $35k a year who put in 80 hour weeks without overtime and burn out after 2 years and China, India and eastern europe are going to take most of our jobs in the next 10 years.

sales of $70 titles are not going to go up as the economy crashes.

Sometimes I feel like I'd rather be known for creating a blockbuster high profile game than a movie of similar status.

i disagree - i know a lot of people who view computer games as a cost saving device - playing a game every night with your buddies costs a hell of a lot less than going out on the town

entertainment, along with alcohol and cigarettes, is recessionproof

Yeah but these jobs are fun! I play for hours in Adobe After Effects and 3DS Max and Audition and I'm not even being paid for it.

The other alternative is printing out boring reports, creating even more boring sql queries, and falling asleep developing Excel macros. All so you can pay off some stupid mortgage and the kids soccer practice.

I started off developing games as a kid. But then corporate america snagged me up as soon as I graduated. Looking back - i should've joined the growing vg industry. I'd be raking it in big time by now.

Oh well. :)
