FZ and powerslave - need a suggestion from each

FZ, I remember you mentioning you like Katatonia. I listened to some of the samples on their site and plan to pick up an album. Which would you suggest?

Powerslave, if I remember right, you listen to Tiamat. I've "The Truth's For Sale," "Cain," and "Brighter than the sun," and liked them. Just like above, I need a suggestion on which album you think is the best to start with.

I have one disc from each band. I have Katatonia's "Viva Emptiness" and Tiamat's "Prey". Of the two I like "Viva Emptiness" better. I thought the Tiamat disc was depressing as hell. But, I wasn't in the best of moods when I got that disc and was listening to it. I should get it out and give it another go. Neither are very heavy and I really don't know how to classify the two.

I'll probably pick up "Viva Emptiness" then since you recommend it and FZ heard good things about it.

You know I listened to the Tiamat mp3's I have again today and for whatever reason it doesn't seem to appeal to me as much as when I came up with my list of CD's to buy about 3 months ago. It's not bad, but I'd definitely rather buy some other CD's instead.

Thanks bro.

I'll hit you guys with some green as soon at I've "spread enough around."

I must not have given out much karma lately if I still can't give to you 2 or to Flah or majustu

I hear comparisons to bands like Anathema and Opeth from Katatonia. In case you're interested. :)

Also to Green Carnation, whom I picked up today. Cool prog act.

I've heard Opeth's Damnation and didn't like it at all. They also had a song on the New England Hardcore and Metal Festival DVD which I didn't really care for either.

I'll have to check out Green Carnation.

Katatonia have two distinct styles -- their death metal days, and their current clean vocals style. Brave Murder Day is their classic DM album, whilst I prefer Tonight's Decision from their clean vox era.

I've honestly never heard of anyone really liking Tiamat. They're an old Century Media band, back from the record label's early days. I didn't even know that they were still around.

Anathema started out, actually, as a My Dying Bride rip off (read the interviews from back in the day). Both Anathema and MDB went the way of clean vocals, with MDB always being the stronger and more talanted of the two. The dissonant violin of old MDB gave them a distinct atmospheric and they would go on to become pioneers of doom-death metal. Anathema's old stuff, around Crestfallen era, wasn't too bad. I like quite a bit of it.

Opeth are a very unique band, that deal with epic songs. Ten minutes on average, with some songs topping 20 minutes. In my experience, I've found them to be one of those like 'em or hate 'em bands. I personally like them. Very talanted.

young guns,check it out

I listened to a few tracks, and I'm really diggin' it. Mellow, atmospheric kinda feel.

That's what I'm looking for. Something mellow but not boring. I liked the samples I heard off Last Fair Deal, Viva Emptiness, and Tonight's Decision, and since they all got nods here, I'll pick up which one I find first/cheapest.

I listened to some samples from Green Carnation. They're not bad. I could definitely listen to some of their music, but I don't know that I'd buy it.

*throws in two cents*

Viva Emptiness is decent and it's the only Katatonia album I can really get into. A Premonition is a great song.

Tiamat - Wildhoney. The rest of their disco is iffy. Their new stuff is paaaaaaaainfully bad.

Damnation isn't that great of an Opeth album, get Deliverence or Blackwater Park and go from there. It sucks you had that as an intro to Opeth since it isn't a good representation of the band at all. Samoth is pretty dead on, you'll think that they're brilliant musical visionaries of the highest order or you'll think it's a bunch of pretentious faggotry.

Get the hour long Light of Day, Day of Darkness when it comes to Green Carnation. So freakin' good.

Samoth - screename come from the Emperor guitarist samoth?

I never got into Katatonia or Tiamat.

If you haven't heard Opeth - Morningrise then you're missing out. Its their second album and truely a masterpiece.

If you're looking for doommetal look into Shape of Despair - Shades of. This album will suck the life from you. Evoken - Embrace the Emptiness is another good one as well as Morgion - Solinari.

I think Opeth's My Arms, Your Hearse album is their crowning achievement. Goddamn do I love that album.

I've yet to hear Morningrise or Still Life though.

Shape of Despair is greatness. Shades of... and the new Forest of Shadows seem to be the only funeral doom I really enjoy.

Get Shape of Despair - Angels of Distress - even more funeral doom than shades of..

Samoth, you gotta post more on this board. You have a lot of knowledge. :)

Not until the entire board pays homage to the True Kings of Metal, Manowar!!

Seriously, though, I don't post that often (obviously, 525 since Oct. '01, lol). But when I see a good metal thread here, I'll always try. And by metal I mean metal... like, the stuff that radios don't play.

I'm really not to up to date on music, with university and all, though. Never heard of Green Carnation. What label are they on? For some reason, I picture them looking like the guys from Bongzilla. Then again, with Cradle and Dimmu topping the top 100 charts, I obviously am not missing anything good. I love hearing people write and talk about Mayhem like they're a relatively new band. Varg left the scene completely. So did Garm. And a lot of the early-gen guys just turned poofter. I think I'd rather be tied up in a chair with my eyes pried open in an empty pitch-black room with nothing except a TV and the video of Crematory's Temple of Love playing on repeat ad infinitum than hear half the junk out nowadays. :shudder:

Yep! You're only the second person to guess that here. I always thought it would be obvious to everyone, since one would have to be living in a black hole to have never heard In The Nightside Eclipse. I'm still pissed they conned all of us into buying that Peccatum CD. Seriously, that album sucked more than Hecate Enthroned's entire discography.

They're on Season Mist now. It's one of Tchort's many side projects.
